NEW RELEASE FROM ANGELO GAJA’s MONTALCINO ESTATE, PIEVE DI SANTA RESTITUTA
OPENING OFFER

2005 Brunello di Montalcino, Pieve di Santa Restituta £160 per six IB
Price will rise to £180 per six from 1st June 2010
In 1994, Angelo Gaja made his first move outside of his Piedmont homeland, purchasing the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino. Over the last 16 years, the wines have become established amongst the élite of the region, which has come as little surprise to those of us who have witnessed Angelo’s extraordinary commitment to quality over his long, distinguished career. Never afraid to make bold moves, Angelo declined to offer 2002s and 2003s when many of his neighbours went ahead, and in 2005 he has elected not to produce Sugarille or Rennina but instead to ‘declassify’ into one estate wine at a much reduced price, a huge financial sacrifice when you consider that Sugarille and Rennina happily command £60-70 a bottle.
This comes as some surprise- the 2005 vintage in Montalcino has produced notably better wines than either 2002 and 2003. Late rain caught a number of growers and although there is less concentration and intensity than in the superlative 2004 and 2006 vintages between which it is sandwiched, 2005 shows far more finesse and approachability and has produced, according to Decanter “ some surprisingly good Brunellos”. Comparisons have been made to the 1998 vintage, one of those unassuming, undervalued vintages that has crept up on many consumers offering great surprises when sandwiched between the much-heralded 1997 and 1999. Angelo is to be applauded for his creativity and the chance to access his wonderful wines at a much-reduced price is one that customers are advised to seize upon. For the many that follow Sugarille and Rennina, we are promised that they will return next year…
