Southern Rhône
Domaine André Brunel
The Brunel family has lived in the Rhône Valley since the 18th century, although it was not until 1919 that André’s grandfather established the Estate of Les Cailloux and began producing wine. Winemaking has since become a family tradition; in 1971 André joined his father and during his career as a Vigneron has turned Les Cailloux into a world-class domaine. André Brunel is now widely recognised as being one of the finest producers of Châteauneuf – as Robert Parker wrote,“André Brunel produces powerful yet rich, elegant, concentrated wines that have gone from strength to strength since the late eighties…he is one of the bright shining lights of Châteauneuf-du-Pape”

Intense, powerful, brooding fruit on the nose. An explosion of layered fruits on the palate with flavours redolent of blackberries, cherries, blackcurrants and cassis. Succulent and rich, with excellent depth of fruit, good grainy tannins and great structure. Powerful yet elegant. Mouthfilling and luscious, with an extremely long and drawn-out finish, this really is spectacular. - armit
Domaine Charvin
Domaine Charvin was established in 1851 by Guillaume Charavin (the family name had to be changed to Charvin around 1910 after an administrative error) and the estate has passed down through 6 generations. It is now in the very capable hands of Laurent Charvin, who took over the reins in 1990 at the tender age of 21, and he has since taken the Domaine from strength to strength. There are 8 hectares of vineyards situated in Châteauneuf in a prime location between Maucoil and Mont Redon and the average age of the vines is 45 years. The Estate also owns 13 hectares in Côtes du Rhône with an average vine age of 35 years. Grenache is the key varietal, making up 80% of the blends. Laurent Charvin makes truly exceptional wines year after year, with elegance and purity of fruit being the hallmarks of his outstanding wines. - armit

The first sample tasted represented two thirds of the final blend. Opulent, fleshy dark brooding fruits with a touch of treacle. Incredible purity of fruit and intensity of flavour. Succulent, powerful and gloriously juicy with fine grained tannins leaving a lingering fruit flavour on the finish. The second sample came from an older vat and displayed more flavours of blueberry and blackberries with peppery notes. Mouthwatering fruit fills the palate with layered fruit flavours, spice and chocolate, with excellent structure and chewy tannins. This is always one of our firm favourites and it certainly didn't fail to deliver in this vintage; the final blend should be spectacular. - armit
