Burgundy 2005 En Primeur - Marquis d'Angerville

We continue to be hugely impressed by the work of Guillaume d’Angerville and Rénaud de Villette. With exceptional vineyards in such careful and conscientious hands, high quality is pretty much guaranteed here but in 2005, nature was so benevolent that in Guillaume’s own words it was a vintage “où le vin se fait lui-même”. Even with terrific wines like these, the team is not resting on its laurels and consider that they can go even higher, beginning trials with bio-dynamism which have so impressed them that they will look to extend this across the domaine soon. It is hard to single out a favourite wine- do you go for the sensuality of the Caillerets, the drive of the Champans, the precision of the Taillepieds or the nobility of the Clos des Ducs? In addition to the reds, the Meursault Santenots, after a scintillating 2004, continues to shine ever brighter and is the complete antithesis of the heavy, buttery, gloopy Meursaults that can regrettably still be found elsewhere in the village.

Delicious, generous citrus fruit allied to a touch of honey and a crisp minerality. Precise and energetic this is a Meursault that shows a gentle hand at work and just seems to get better and better. Drink from 2008.

More intensity and power than one normally expects from the ever charming Champans, this boasts a sweet scent of violets and spring flowers, followed by full, fleshy black fruit flavours. A beautifully fresh, harmonious generous example. Drink from 2009.

A floral scent and a classic note of fine crunchy raspberry this has the classic mineral austerity of Taillepieds. Precise, reserved and only hinting at the joys yet to come. Watch this space. Drink from 2010.

A very sensual wine that is ripe round and complete and yet is blessed with freshness and energy. Silky ripe black cherry fruit, hints of violets and finely grained tannins grace the palate. Wonderfully smooth and sophisticated. Drink from 2008.

Layers and layers of sophistication. This oozes style and status. Notes of violets, chocolate, ripe black cherries and just when you think you are coming to the end, cue more layers of ripe brambly fruit and minerals.
