Domaine Blain Gagnard
Domaine Blain Gagnard
He has seen enough vintages to feel more than in control of his métier and his wines
display the same quiet confidence that you pick up quickly in their maker.
Jean-Marc Blain is never a man to over-egg the pudding but it wasn't hard to detect that he is pretty pleased with his 2010s. With more than thirty years of experience, he has seen enough vintages to feel more than in control of his métier and his wines display the same quiet confidence that you pick up quickly in their maker. Volumes are of course down but the wines retain a natural, unhurried feel, impressing via their restraint rather than shouting from the rooftops.
Wines listed online without a buy button are only available in limited quantities.

White price per case in bond
Puligny Montrachet £250.00
A delectable Puligny showing finesse and a friendly, approachable style. Notes of white peach and subtle fragrances on the nose. The acidity is a feature here but cleansing rather than aggressive and leaving a lasting sense of elegance and refinement. Drink from release.
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets £330.00 Sold Out
The class of the 1er Crus in Jean-Marc's cellar, this shows raciness and precision with good concentration of flavours on the palate and a clear mineral line. Crisp, linear and with abundant finesse, this will be ideal in three or four years. Drink from 2014.
Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £320.00 Sold Out
Riper, notes of yellow fruit with a little gingerbread spice on the nose, this is a more generous style but without ever losing its composure. Open and accessible already, showing its layers of flavours and never hurrying along too vigorously. Balanced and calm and very typical to its origins. Drink from 2015.
Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £475.00 Sold Out
Half the normal production this year with a little localised hail also taking yields down further. Notes of almond and frangipani on the nose, a more delicate and subtle fragrance than habitually seen for this wine. On the palate, there is excellent delineation with power starting to build. All of the elements are there and this should develop over time into something rather exciting. Drink from 2016.
Le Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £1,250.00 Sold Out
The king of the cellar, there is always a hush and a calm when this wine makes its entrance. Why such reverence? It is hard to say but unmistakably, as the first aromas hit the senses, all chatter stops and tasters are locked in deep concentration, trying to decipher every nuance and nugget of information being offered up. As ever, this is a wine to savour slowly and a wine that demands time and patience, both years in the cellar and hours at the table. A privilege to taste. Drink from 2017.
