Cap de Faugères 2005, Côtes-de-Castillon

Château Cap de Faugères is one of the leading wines in the Côtes de Castillon, situated almost upon the St Emilion border. At £95 this also offers terrific value and the accomplished winemaking of Michel Rolland is clearly in evidence in the rich, dense fruit.

Upfront, voluptuously ripe fruit, soft tannins and a super fresh finish. Very attractive indeed, with an equally attractive price tag to match! – armit 16 points

A perennial value pick for smart consumers, Cap de Faugeres is fashioned by world-renowned oenologist, Michel Rolland. The 2005, which achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, is a forward concoction of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Its black/purple color is accompanied by sweet scents of incense, black tea, licorice, and subtle oak. Medium to full-bodied, opulent, and rich, it should drink well for a decade or more.
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 88-90 points

Loads of blackberry and raspberry aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate with fine tannins and a long, caressing finish. – James Suckling, The Wine Spectator 89-91 points

Gigault, Cuvée Viva 2005, 1ères Côtes de Blaye

Château Gigault Cuvée Viva is our favourite property in the Côtes de Blaye and the brilliant Stéphane Derenoncourt has been consultant winemaker here for many years. It offers outstanding value and would certainly be a lot more expensive had its vineyards fallen within the boundaries of St Emilion. Recommended.

Very impressive concentration and structure – delicious ripe blackcurrants and cream, smoky tannins and an admirable persistence on the finish. This gem never fails to deliver excellent value for money.– armit 15.5 points

One of my favorite inexpensive offerings from the Blaye region, this deep ruby/purple-colored 2005 reveals relatively big tannin for its style along with plenty of blackberry and earthy fruit, and impressive body, density, glycerin, and alcohol (14% naturally). It should age easily for 4-6 years. – Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 88-89 points

Impressive aromas of tar, berry and currant follow through to medium- to full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a long finish. Solid as usual. – James Suckling, The Wine Spectator 89-91 points

Very dark crimson. Veering towards overripe on the nose. Good freshness on the palate, Quite tough tannins at present. Certainly a good effort but a bit over-extracted and too severe on the finish. – Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com 15.5 points
