Bruno Giacosa - New Releases

"Known by his peers as "The Maestro" his wines are renowned for their elegance, complexity and longevity."

Barolo

It is a tremendous pleasure and privilege to be able to offer the new releases from the maestro of Piemonte, Bruno Giacosa. Alongside the headline grabbing Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva 2001, Bruno has exercised typical strictness with his 2003s and has decided only to release wines from two of his greatest holdings, Asili in Barbaresco and Falletto di Serralunga in Barolo. Sadly, his strictness also means that production is down considerably.

For those looking for an introduction to Giacosa, we cannot recommend highly enough his Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto d’Alba. These offer wonderful value and can be happily drunk young, although wines of this quality will always continue to develop positively given a little time in bottle.

Bruno is also guilty of producing the best Arneis in the region. In a world awash with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, this is brilliant, original and totally delicious alternative. Finally, Bruno’s Spumante is also a standard setter and continues to be one of our most popular wines.
We are hugely enthusiastic about this wonderful range of wines and would be deeply offended if you didn’t try them! If you would like further guidance and assistance, please do not hesitate to call us on 0207 908 0600.

Barbaresco Asili 2003

"The just-bottled 2003 Barbaresco Asili is the only Barbaresco the ultra-perfectionist Bruno Giacosa has decided to release in this difficult vintage and it shows why Giacosa, along with Angelo Gaja, is in a class of his own when it comes to Barbaresco. Medium-red in color, it offers an expressive nose along with delicate nuances of super-ripe red fruits, macerated cherries and alcohol. Made in an atypically lush style, yet balanced by a classic sense of structure and proportion, this medium to full-bodied Barbaresco is one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018." - 92 points, The Wine Advocate #167

Price per case (duty & VAT inc.)                            £356 per 6 bottles

Barolo Falletto 2003

The nose offers a lovely scent of cherries and red fruits but there is no mistaking that this is a big wine with substantial tannic structure. In the hands of many others growers, the conditions of 2003 proved too trying but Bruno has magically retained his hallmark elegance alongside the natural power of the vintage. Really well done. Drink from 2008-2018

"2003 Barolo Falletto—The Falletto offers very ripe, sweet red fruit in an accessible style, with good freshness for the vintage. Today this wine is an infant. It shows slightly rough tannins, and the wine will clearly require time to come together." - 90-93 points, The Wine Advocate, Piedmont Report 2006

Price per case (duty & VAT inc.)                            £397 per 6 bottles

Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba 2003

An extremely attractive, intense scent of liquorice lifts from the nose. This is a superb wine, packed full with succulent ripe, healthy fruit. It is complex and generous and very long on the palate. The vintage will allow relatively early drinking but this will undoubtedly develop tremendously well in the next decade and beyond. Drink from 2008-2025+

"2003 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto—The Le Rocche del Falletto, from the oldest and best-exposed plants in the vineyard, is more pronounced in its mineral, spice and balsamic notes, with plenty of super-ripe red fruit. It is bigger, deeper and more complex than the Falletto. The older age of the vines here gives broader yet finer tannins.

Bruno Giacosa is a famously shy and introverted man who shuns everything that has to do with public relations. Yet despite his unassuming presence, his wines are towering achievements that are rightly considered reference-point wines for the region. Giacosa typically doesn’t allow journalists to taste wines from barrel as several years ago the estate received negative reviews from a major US publication after having been provided barrel samples. So, needless to say it is a rare treat when Giacosa decides to personally show the wines and talk about their evolution. I was blown away by the quality of the wines, and by the extraordinary dignity and humility of Bruno Giacosa and enologist Dante Scaglione." - 91-94 points, The Wine Advocate, Piedmont Report 2006

Price per case (duty & VAT inc.)                            £526 per 6 bottles

Price per case (duty & VAT inc.)                            £538 per 3 magnums

Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba Riserva 2001 - limited availability

"Darker and more backward than the Falletto in both its aromas and flavors, Giacosa’s staggering 2001 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto offers an explosive nose of spices, menthol, minerals, smoke and scorched earth followed by waves of sweet fruit that coat the palate in a potent mix of finesse and sheer power, with fine tannins, and a lingering balsamic note on the finish. This complex, multi-dimensional wine will require considerable patience and will age gracefully for several decades. Made from the oldest vines at Falletto, the 2001 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is another towering achievement from Bruno Giacosa. An Azienda Agricola Falletto di Bruno Giacosa bottling. To be released in 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2031." - 97 points, The Wine Advocate #167
