Bruno Giacosa
New Releases February 2012
“I can think of no Italian producer whose wines have given me as much pleasure.”
Robert Parker
Giacosa's new releases are eagerly anticipated each year and we are delighted to announce our offer of the Barbaresco Santo Stefano and Barbaresco Asili from the 2009 vintage and the Barolo Falletto 2008, all of which are exceptional wines. Also released is the Barbaresco Asili Riserva 2007, a very rare
wine made in outstanding vintages and awarded an impressive 97 points by Galloni who described it as "a massive, towering wine of majestic proportions."
We tasted the new releases in the autumn and were once again captivated by the incredible
depth and elegance of Giacosa's wines which are a magnificent expression of their great terroirs and reflect Bruno's passion for achieving complete perfection. They also have the potential to mature exceptionally well over many years. His wines continue to have an outstanding reputation and are increasingly sought-after and difficult to find.
The varietal wines were also impressive. A visionary pioneer, Bruno Giacosa was the first to champion the famous Roero Arneis for which
his cuvée remains a benchmark in the region.
He is particularly proud of the Roero 2011, and also the Dolcetto from the same vintage,
both of which are a step up in quality from the previous year. The Barbera 2010 was also extremely fine with ripe, spicy flavours while the Nebbiolo Valmaggiore 2010, made from a single vineyard cru, was sweet and pure with delicate red cherry notes.
We anticipate intense interest for these new releases, especially for the Barbaresco Asili Riserva 2007, a wine which will be in great
demand. The Asili Riserva will be available strictly by allocation only, with preference given to those who balance their demands across the range.
The opening prices in this offer apply until 1st March but we urge you to reply as soon as possible.
"It is pretty clear that Giacosa's
finest wines remain relatively well-priced within the context of the world's finest and most collectable wines."
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate.

Produced only in the most exceptional of years, and matured for an extended time in bottle before release, the 2007 Asili Riserva is a magnificent wine with intense aromas which gradually open in the glass to reveal layers of complexity and depth. Exotic, dark cherry and wild strawberry fruit aromas combine with floral rose petal notes with darker savoury and dried fruit characters in the background. The palate is full of supple, juicy ripe fruit with dark red berry and cherry characters, intermingled with hints of mocha coffee and an attractive savoury note. There is huge depth and concentration here
supported by firm, perfectly integrated, smooth tannins which give an elegant structure to this very fine wine. Drink 2015 to 2035
“The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is sweet, perfumed and totally gorgeous in its round, sensual fruit. Silky, elegant tannins frame the long, harmonious finish. Stylistically the 2007 is most similar to the 2004, although it seems to have more exuberant, opulent fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2037.”
97 points, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Feb 2011
Piedmont experienced an earlier harvest than usual in 2011. Bruna Giacosa described 2011 as a "great vintage, the wines being similar in quality to 2004 and 2007." A relatively warm April was followed by a cool June and July with spells of rain. The warm and dry weather returned in August, and these conditions lasted right though the ripening and harvest period. The warm weather accelerated the development of the vines but though conditions were dry, night time temperatures were cool. Water reserves from winter rains also helped and prevented the vines suffering too much.
The dry conditions reduced yields especially for the earlier ripening varieties such as Dolcetto and vines on south and southwest facing slopes but quality was very good overall.
Just under an inch of rain at the beginning of September and a burst of rainfall mid
September refreshed the later-ripening Barbera and Nebbiolo. Growers throughout the region, including Giacosa, reported an excellent harvest for these two varieties. Warm temperatures tempered Barbera's high acidity and created the ideal weather conditions in September which extended the long, slow ripening of Nebbiolo producing very refined and vibrant wines.
A vintage which in May and August seemed as if it might be a difficult vintage but it has turned out to be a very promising year, similar to 2007 in quality, especially for Nebbiolo, though yields are very low.
