2010 Releases

Benoît Droin was obviously extremely pleased with his 2010s, positively bouncing around his immaculate cellar. He has good reason to be. A man who clearly has a passion for his terroir, he is also a firm believer that the fundamental function of his wine is to provide enjoyment. With the 1ers Crus having taken the brunt of the millerandage, yields were down a little here, but the quality of the fruit throughout was very good - small, concentrated grapes with a clean bill of health. Benoît found it difficult to give a straight vintage comparison, he likened the 2010 to 2000 because of the richness and concentration, but with the acidity and freshness of the 2008. A classic style, with precision and minerality which will appeal to all Chablis lovers.

Chablis 2010
£110 per 12 IB Buy
A lovely simple, direct Chablis. Bright, fresh citrus fruit with good balancing acidity, a glossy mouthfeel and an abundance of white flower aromas. Mouthwatering and excellent value. Drink from release.

Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2010
£155 per 12 IB Buy
A mixture of various plots all bringing their own characteristics to the party, this wine is consistently more round, inviting and open in style than some of its stablemates. White peaches, yellow plums and flowers lie on top of the gentle mineral structure. Very appealing indeed. Drink 2013-2016.

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2010
£185 per 12 IB SOLD OUT
Lemon and sherbet, with minerals and hint of smokiness leap from the glass. The expansive nose is followed by definition and precision on the palate. The kimmeridgian clay veins in the site are really evident, providing a silvery, mercurial quality that underpins the fruit. 25% of new oak is used to complement the smoky, hot stone character. This has all the elements of a fabulous wine and in 5 or 6 years will be absolutely irresistible. Drink 2017-2027.

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu 2010
£185 per 12 IB SOLD OUT
Situated in a very sunny spot, this year the grapes were tiny and super concentrated. Usually picked first and this year was no exception. The fruit is ripe and almost tropical, but peaches and honey predominate. Benoît likens the character to Condrieu, with a rich, almost unctuous fruit allied to a racy acidity. Delicious for those less enamoured of the classic mineral style. This is round and appealing and will be approachable in its youth but will also age beautifully. Drink 2013-2025.

Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2010
£285 per 12 IB SOLD OUT
Incredibly delicate, ethereal, "aérien" aromas. The absence of wood here has allowed the fruit and perfume to remain incredibly pure and elegant. There is a delicate, lacy character to the mineral structure, that balances perfectly with the soft but present acidity. It has a pristine, pure, crystalline quality that is absolutely delightful. Drink 2015-2025.

Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 2010
£295 per 12 IB Buy
The exposed warm valley site provided lovely ripening. The nose is generous and perfumed, with wafts of ripe yellow stone fruit, toast and flowers. The ripe lush fruit follows through on the palate, with density and richness but it is held in check by a bracing limey backbone of acidity. The finish is long and honeyed. Drink 2015-2025.

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2010
£295 per 12 IB Buy
A less showy, more restrained and statuesque style than the Vaudésir. The oak is pronounced and still needs time to integrate with the attravtive green fruit and fresh acidity. But there are layers and layers of complexity to come. Stony, smoky, graphite hints reveal themselves as the wine opens up. There is depth and a core strength to this wine, promising great things with patience. You will be rewarded if you can wait. Drink 2018-2030.

Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2010
£330 per 12 IB Buy
The very old vines here, up to 64 years old, produce tiny grapes. In less expert hands the the resulting massive concentration could give a sense of overripeness, but Benoît counteracts this, picking earlier to retain the freshness. The nose does have an almost tropical richness, but is balanced with herby, minty notes. With a lovely ripe greengage character to the fruit, limey zestiness and a dense mouthfilling ripeness, this is very appealing indeed. A little time is needed to integrate the oak with the fruit and the acidity, but this is going to be absolutely wonderful. Drink 2016-2026.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2010
£345 per 12 IB Buy
This Les Clos is spectacular. A fantastic expression of control and precision. Orange blossom, citrus zests and woodsmoke curl out of the glass. Hints of seashell and stone mingle with candied lemon fruit, angelica and yellow cherries, all underpinned by a fine yet persistent filigree of minerality and acidity that lift the palate and carry you through to an incredibly long finish. Wonderful. Drink 2018-2030.
