Burgundy 2005

Domaine François Faiveley - 2006 En Primeur

Erwan Faiveley is a man on a mission. Worldly, widely travelled and wise beyond his years, Erwan has brought new life to this sleeping giant and is convinced that the Domaine can once again be considered amongst the very greatest. Revolutions can, of course, be a time for people to lose their heads but Erwan is a Faiveley through and through and the family belief is that great wines are made for keeping. These continue to be big, powerful, richly intense wines especially in a vintage like 2005 but we detect the beginnings of greater precision and purity which bodes well for the future. We were again really impressed by the wonderful Gevrey 1er Cru, Clos des Issarts while those who wish to find the greatest Corton out there need to look no further than the epic Clos des Cortons Faiveley.

Red Wines

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts 2005

A standout amongst the 1er crus again, this terrific vineyard, a mere five metres from Ruchottes Chambertin, has turned out a silky yet punchy wine that offers refinement and richness in equal measure and a lovely resonating finish. Drink from 2010.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2005

From three parcels totalling 1.5 hectares, there is inherent complexity in this wine but also surprising restraint at first. This soon gives way to a meaty, animal quality that suggests a serious, dark side and a long time needed in cellar. Drink from 2013.

Price per case in bond          £320 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT

Echézeaux Grand Cru 2005

Really well-balanced, with an attractive richness offset by spices and a fresh energy. Plenty of stature once more and super potential. Drink from 2012.

Price per case in bond          £340 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT

Corton Clos des Cortons Grand Cru 2005

Tremendous Corton, confident, spicy and bold, full of black pepper and power and a really hearty, positive energy. This will need a lot of patience but will surely be one of the great classics of this famous vineyard. Drink from 2015.

Price per case in bond          £345 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT

Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru 2005

A touch of licquorice and aniseed and welcome refinement. This starts softly but builds in intensity and volume, with a sense of drive and purpose that carry it through to a zippy and fresh finish. Drink from 2012.

Price per case in bond          £350 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT

Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2005

More vigour here and lovely succulence. An excellent example, this offers hedgerow fruit and an enchanting perfume and all the while it expresses a sense of purpose and a tremendous persistance. Drink from 2012.

Price per case in bond          £400 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2005

Aristocratic and stately, this is really fine and beautifully balanced. Plenty of scale and volume but with no hint of crassness or agressiveness. Complete and actually rather elegant, a beauty of a Clos de Bèze for the long haul. Drink from 2013.

Price per case in bond          £560 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT
