Domaine Fontaine Gagnard - 2005 En Primeur
Richard Fontaine is another modest man who hides his light under a bushel. A self-confessed workaholic who hasn’t taken a holiday in years (“I’ll do that when I retire”, he chortles), he is never happier than when beavering away in his vineyards. In fact, he was almost perversely upset by the outstanding quality of the fruit in 2005- “You could have made 2005s sitting in an armchair” he jokes, before adding that he personally, and almost perversely, is more satisfied by his 2004s simply as the vintage presented far more of a challenge to him. There was hail damage in the southern part of Chassagne which has caused a drop in volumes here. Nevertheless, quality remains at the top level and the extra richness of 2005s will make these wines hugely, and deservedly, popular.
