Angelo Gaja - New Piedmont Releases 2010

It is our great pleasure to offer the new releases from Angelo Gaja in Piedmont.

A tasting with Gaja is always an exceptional experience but the tasting of the 2007s from Barbaresco quickly exceeded our expectations. It is obvious that the vintage is very special indeed.

The wines, as ever, showed immense depth, class and remarkable individuality. However the hallmark of the 2007s is their opulence. This is combined with great charm and complexity, a style which is comparable to the highly sought-after 1997s, a vintage where Angelo Gaja famously excelled. Like the 1997s, they also have an incredible capacity to age.

Barbaresco 2007

£465 per 6 In Bond Buy

£558.28 per 6 inc. duty and VAT Buy

Produced from estate-owned vineyards, Gaja’s Barbaresco has deep, complex fruit flavours supported by refreshing acidity and fi rm tannins and although it has the capacity to age for 20 or more years, the wine can be appreciated within a few years of bottling. The 2007 is an outstanding expression of the vintage. Aromas of plums, forest fruits, cherries and dried herbs are followed by dark red berry fruit flavours and a lovely rich, savoury character. The tannins are firm but ripe and they are balanced by a refreshing acidity. Mineral notes and a hint of wood spice give complexity and depth on the fi nish. The style of the wine is more opulent and forward than the 2006 vintage but it is also very elegant, complex and persistent and one of the finest examples made by Gaja. Drink from 2016 to 2030. armit

All readers need to do is taste the 2007 Barbaresco to get a sense of the promise the vintage holds at Gaja. Soft and seamless on the palate, the Barbaresco shows wonderful
integrity in its fruit in an opulent, yet mid-weight style. Fragrant, perfumed aromatics are woven throughout, while an attractive spiciness develops in the glass. There is incredible depth to the fruit and simply phenomenal overall balance. Readers will not want to miss this Barbaresco; arguably Gaja’s finest since 1997

Costa Russi 2007

£1050 per 6 In Bond Buy

£1245.65 per 6 inc. duty and VAT Buy

Among all the Gaja single vineyards, Costa Russi is the most captivating and elegant with an appealing, velvety structure from a young age but it also has excellent ageing potential. The 2007 Costa Russi is an outstanding effort from Gaja. The bouquet is rich and multi-layered with notes of black fruits, dark cherries, spices and herbs. The palate is extremely ripe and deep but very elegant with fine, harmonious tannins. Deep red berry fruit is intermingled with notes of sage, dried herbs and flowers and the finish is very long and persistent. It will evolve into a multi-layered wine with immense finesse, but will be delicious in a few years time due to the powerful fruit. Drink from 2015 to 2035.

The 2007 Langhe Costa Russi combines richness and focus to a degree that has seldom been seen here. This insanely beautiful wine boasts a breathtaking bouquet, explosive, generous fruit and an absolutely eternal fi nish. Layers of dark red fruit, minerals, fl owers and spices saturate every corner of the palate as this mind-blowing Costa Russi struts its stuff. This is a towering effort from Angelo Gaja. The wine should be accessible fairly early and age for decades. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2037.

The complexity of Gaja’s wines reach their pinnacle in this wine, the quintessential expression of Nebbiolo. The 2007 is an extraordinary wine with intense aromas of ripe, dark fruit and exotic spices. On the palate, there are multiple-layers of sweet, red berry fruit and notes of dried apricots, wild flowers and minerals. The tannins are elegant and smooth. This is a very serious wine indeed and it has the potential to age for 30 or more years. Drink from 2020 to 2040.

The 2007 Langhe Sori Tildin opens with a huge, kaleidoscopic bouquet that immediately draws me in. A remarkably vivid wine, the sensual Sori Tildin caresses the palate with silky, textured fruit, showing incredible power, length and class. There is a transparency to the wine that is beguiling. Once again, the fi nish is eternal. Sori Tildin is one of Gaja’s more nuanced wines, and in 2007 it is breathtakingly beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2037.

Sorì San Lorenzo 2007

£1050 per 6 In Bond Buy

£1245.65 per 6 inc. duty and VAT Buy

Sorì San Lorenzo is almost always the most powerful and austere of Gaja’s single-vineyard wines, usually requiring longer to age. The most massive of the single vineyard wines, the 2007 has incredibly intense, deep aromas with intense notes of black cherries and dark red berry fruit. The palate is concentrated and deep, with very rich flavours and a firm structure which is combined with vibrant acidity. Extremely complex, with mineral notes on the fi nish, this is a colossal wine which needs time to mature. It will evolve impressively in time. Drink from 2020 to 2045

The 2007 Langhe Sori San Lorenzo is perhaps the most massive, virile wine in this lineup, and accordingly it will require the most time. Tannic and austere at the outset, the wine gradually opens to reveal staggering richness and depth in its dark fruit. The wine turns more elegant in the glass, revealing a myriad of black fruit, tar, licorice, spices and scorched earth in a dazzling display of class and elegance. This is one for the ages. Anticipated maturity: 2027-2047.

2007 Vintage Report

The 2007 harvest in Italy was the smallest ever recorded due to the exceptionally dry weather throughout the country. These conditions produced wines with real concentration and charm, with bold and complex fruit characters, and the capacity to age for many years.

The winter months in Northern Italy were extremely mild and makred by the lack of snow, which set the stage for very dry conditions. Hail caused widespread damage in Piedmont which reduced the yield, but there was a long and dry summer without any extremes of temperature which resulted in an early harvest and a small but perfectly formed crop.

The condition of the harvest was considered excellent.
