Domaine Jean Rijckaert
The maestro of the Mâconnais continues to turn out an impeccable range of delicious, honest and racy wines from Arbois to Viré. There is something of the nutty professor about Jean and he even confessed to setting up his bed in the cuverie during the early ferments just to be on hand in case of any teething problems! Such parental dedication to the raising of young wines is clearly shown in their confident, complete style. For those looking for something really smart, the Pouilly Fuissé Les Chailloux is an absolute must whilst the bargain hunters will love his St Véran and straight Pouilly Fuissé. Perhaps the canniest buy of all though is the Arbois, a terrific alternative to Chablis at an unbeatable price.

Pouilly Fuissé Les Chailloux Vieilles Vignes 2005
This is the most serious of Jean's Mâcon wines. Displaying salty minerals, unroasted almonds and cashews, this will be even better given a couple of years in bottle but it is so good already, that it will be hard to resist the call of the corkscrew. Drink from release.
