Domaine Nicolas Potel
Never one to rest idle, Nicolas has now begun to acquire a few vineyards of his own alongside the contracts that he has for sourcing fruit all over the Côte d’Or. His wines have been incredibly popular with armit customers over the last 12 months but we believe that his 2005s will convert even the most stubborn. It is hard to summarise exactly what it is about Nicolas’s wines that is so intoxicating (apart from the obvious!) but they have all of the energy, exuberance and respect that he radiates. His reputation has been built on his mastery of Pinot Noir, as anyone who is lucky enough to try his Vosne 1er Crus and especially his Chambertin or Bonnes-Mares will surely attest. However, he is also a seriously underestimated white wine maker. His Santenay Vieilles Vignes is one of the most outstanding wines for the price that we have found and we were once again so taken by it that we have purchased the lot. He has also managed to track down some seriously good value Puligny whilst his Bâtard, Criots and Montrachet offer everything that these famous vineyards can bar the unwelcome sense of overpaying. Hats off, yet again.

A terrific wine and simply outstanding value for money. The warmer style of the vintage will make this immediately attractive with its peach melba, rounded and easy tones, finishing brilliantly with a crisp, refreshing bite. Everything you could wish for and a whole lot more. Drink from release.

A perfect Puligny for attacking young, this is tender, fragile and floral at first but then builds in confidence and dimension, showing the finesse and quality of this famous village. Drink from release.

Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 2005
A brilliant Criots, full of complexity and verve. Fresh stem ginger, lemongrass and lemon zest introduce a rich palate full of flavour and with no lack of finesse. Lovely and long. Drink from 2009.

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 2005
As only Bâtard can, this has all of the brooding energy typical of the best examples but for once, it is not all immediately on show, preferring a more restrained, intriguing air that invites investigation. Persistent and almost refined but with so much more to come. Drink from 2010.

Le Montrachet Grand Cru 2005
Given its hallowed status, there are still too many Montrachet out there undeserving of the name. This is not one of them. Nicolas amply demonstrates why he is regarded as one of the most talented winemakers in Burgundy today and if only more Montrachet would come his way, the world would be a happier place. Nicolas always prefers to work on the Vosne side of Nuits St Georges and here he amply demonstrates his craftmanship with a fresh black fruit accent and a delicate and beautifully balanced wine. Drink from 2009.
