Domaine Rostaing

René Rostaing bottled his first cuvée in 1971, when he owned just 1.5 hectares of vineyards split between the Côte Blonde and Landonne. Gradually he has acquired more vineyards for the Rostaing estate and now has 7 hectares in Côte Rôtie and 1 hectare in Condrieu, with some vines over 80 years old. A purist at heart and meticulous in everything that he does, René does almost no de-stemming and uses very little oak in order to safeguard the expression and terroir of the wines. All wines are bottled unfiltered.

Domaine Ogier

Despite having grown grapes in the region for generations, it was only during the early 1990s that the Ogier family began selling wines commercially. Michel Ogier handed the reins over to his son Stéphane in 1991, who built upon his father’s hard work and the estate is now considered to be one of the finest in Northern Rhône. Stéphane’s Syrah La Rosine is produced from vines just outside the appellation of Côte Rôtie and is possibly one of the best value wines you will find in the area.

We were able to taste the 4 barrels that are the components to the eventual classic Côte Rôtie blend. The Côte Rôtie is always the focus of the estate; parcel selections will never be produced if the single vineyard juice is required for the Côte Rôtie blend instead, as with the 2008 vintage. Barrel 1 was rich, concentrated and with layered notes of black fruit and cherries, with lovely acidity to balance. Barrel 2 displayed more brooding black fruit flavours and firmer tannin - more powerful in style, as the grapes are sourced from the Côte Brune - but still elegant. Barrel 3 had good fruit intensity, with berry fruit compote and softer tannins. Barrel 4 was much fleshier and meaty on the palate with notes of spice and chocolate, with good concentration and excellent structure.  - armit

Domaine du Colombier

Domaine du Colombier is run by Laurent ‘Longshanks’ Viale. Three generations of the Viale family have worked in the cellars based in Tain L’Hermitage, and it was in 1990 that Laurent joined his father Gaby in running the family business. The estate previously sold their grapes to a number of premium Rhône estates, including Guigal, but Laurent and his father finally bottled their own estate wine for their maiden vintage in 1991. The domaine has since gone from strength to strength and now owns 13 hectares of Syrah, 1.9 hectares of Marsanne and also 1.81 hectares in the highly prized Hermitage appellation. Lutte raisonée is practiced throughout the vineyards and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration to retain maximum expression of fruit.

We tasted the 3 pre-blend barrel components separately. Barrel 1 was extremely concentrated and rich with powerful black fruit flavours and firm tannins. Lovely, jammy, forward fruit. Barrel 2 was slightly closed, but still very powerful: inky black with powerful fruit and chewy tannins, this will provide great structure to the blend. Barrel 3 was more in the meaty, spicy flavour spectrum. Red fruit flavours and bacon fat. Sweeter, juicier, less intense and easy drinking. The final blend should be fantastic. . - armit

Quite simply stunning. Brooding fruit aromas on the nose, leading to concentrated dark, black fruits on the palate with herbs and licorice in the background. Very powerful, mouthfilling and intense with excellent purity of fruit and grainy tannins. Rich, yet poised and elegant. Delicious fruit flavours and a very long, lingering finish. Sensational - a must-have for your cellar.  - armit
