The Wines of Ca'Marcanda (Angelo Gaja)

 

Promis

Formerly produced at Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, this is now one of the three wines produced at Ca’ Marcanda, principally from Merlot (55%) and Syrah (35%), but with 10% of Sangiovese which still comes from Montalcino. The varieties are fermented separately in tanks, and the wine blended in the January or February following the vintage. It is then aged in barriques for 12 months before bottling. The wine combines the elegance and suppleness of Merlot and Syrah with the vigour of Sangiovese. It is a real pleasure to drink.

Appellation: Toscana I.G.T.
Variety: 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah and 10% Sangiovese
Vineyards: Mainly rich, dark soils (terre brune)
Aging: 18 months in slightly used barriques, then several months of bottle aging.

Magari

Magari is an Italian word with several meanings: if only, perhaps, would that it were true. It was chosen because it contains a touch of irony, putting a smile on one's face and helping to create a good mood. While hard work and great determination have been dedicated to the Ca'Marcanda project, the name Magari reflects the Piemontese way of not trumpeting one's accomplishments.The second of Ca’ Marcanda’s three wines, this is made entirely from grapes grown on the estate; a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet France. As with the Promis, the varieties are blended after fermentation; they spend an extra six months in barrel, and the wine is then aged for six months in bottle before release. A classic Bordeaux blend which nonetheless reflects the essence of the Maremma.

Appellation: Toscana I.G.T.
Variety: 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc
Vineyards: A mix of white, stony soils (terre blanche) and rich, dark soils (terre brune) of Ca’Marcanda.
Aging: 18 months in new and slightly used barriques, then at least 6 months of bottle aging.

Camarcanda

As with Sassicaia, Camarcanda – the winery’s grand vin – carries the distinguished Bolgheri appellation. A blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc fermented individually and then blended before ageing for 18 months in barriques. The wine is complex, with rich fruit and aromatic and spicy nuances; concentrated, tightly knit, smooth and harmonious.

Appellation: Bolgheri D.O.C.
Variety: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc
Vineyards: From the stoniest sites of the Ca’Marcanda estate in Castagneto Carducci. The terre bianche (white soils) of these sites are ideal for producing long-lived wines.
Aging: 18 months in new barriques, then at least 12 months of bottle aging.
