White wines of Angelo Gaja - Piedmont

rossj bass

Rossj-Bass

This Chardonnay comes from two four acre vineyards planted in 1984: Bass (as it is slightly lower lying) and Rossj, named after Angelo’s younger daughter, Rossana. From 1991 vintage, grapes from a twelve acre vineyard in Serralunga have also been added to the blend. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is then transferred to barriques for the malolactic fermentation and ageing. The wine is wonderfully rich and honeyed, with fine mineral complexity and terrific length.

Appellation: Langhe D.O.C.
Variety: Chardonnay (with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc)
Vineyards: Located in Barbaresco and Serralunga
Aging: 6-7 months in slightly used barriques (with malolactic fermentation)
Available vintage(s): 2007

Gaia & Rey

The first of Angelo’s Chardonnay vineyards, planted in 1979, is named after his daughter Gaia, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. There are 9 acres of vines in the village of Treiso, with high density planting giving extremely low yields. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in barriques for 6-8 months; it combines great richness with a fine citrus character and lively, elegant acidity. With bottle age, the wine gains added finesse and smoothness.

Appellation: Langhe D.O.C.
Variety: Chardonnay
Vineyards: Located in Treiso and Serralunga
Aging: 6-8 months in new and slightly used barriques (with malolactic fermentation).

Alteni Di Brassica

Gaja’s Sauvignon Blanc was planted in 1983 and first produced with the 1991 vintage. The vineyard, in Barbaresco, is named after the alteni, or small stone walls, which once surrounded the area’s orchards, and brassica, the yellow wild-flowers which cover the vineyards in the Spring. Gaja also owns 3 acres of Sauvignon vines in Serralunga, and these are included in the blend. The wine is aged in oak for 6 months before bottling. It is delicately perfumed, harmonious and has a marvelously fresh acidity to balance the fruit. It has excellent ageing potential.

Appellation: Langhe D.O.C.
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Vineyards: Located in Barbaresco and Serralunga
Aging: 6 months in slightly used barriques (with malolactic fermentation).
