Bordeaux 2009 – An Outstanding Vintage
Six months have already passed since the first tastings of the Bordeaux 2009s and with the dust settling on the frenetic en primeur campaign, and the harvest for the 2010 underway, are the 2009s still as brilliant as they were cracked up to be? The answer, according to a recent tasting panel by James Lawther MW and Steven Spurrier of Decanter Magazine, and from our own tastings in Bordeaux a few weeks ago, is a resounding yes.
Simply put, the 2009 is one of the greatest vintages of all time, clearly evident in the tastings from the very powerful fruit, full tannins and sheer persistence of flavours, though the ripeness of fruit means that many wines will be delicious in three or four years. Although most of the top trophy wines have sold out due to incredible demand, it is still possible to find parcels from the vintage at affordable prices. Here are a few highlights, mentioned in the November issue of Decanter, which are still available from armit in limited quantities.

Château Capbern Gasqueton 2009, Saint-Estèphe 12 bottles £145 IB “Classic St-Estephe nose that blends power and finesse with a satiny texture and great depth. Very good wine. 2014 – 2020.” - Decanter 17 A wonderful expression of the vintage from the same stable as Calon-Ségur, this wine seems to be developing in complexity as it matures. Tasted for the second time, it surprised us again with its richness and intensity and will continue to exceed expectations in our opinion. armit 16.5 October 2010 Château Lalande Borie 2009, St Julien 12 bottles £180 IB Buy “Deep, fleshy, almost voluptuous fruit with good length and grip on the finish. 2013 – 2018.” - Decanter 16+ Château Potensac 2009, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Médoc 12 bottles £185 IB Buy “Fine, floral concentration, very good Médoc with depth, length and class. 2014 – 2018.” - Decanter 16 'G' 2009 Guinaudeau Vignerons 6 bottles £99 IB Buy “A new wine made from selected parcels in Fronsac. 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot grown on limestone. Amazingly aromatic – all dark fruit and spice on the palate. Long and linear with good refreshing minerality. 2014 – 2018.” - Decanter 16.5 We have a strong relationship with the Guinaudeau family and this wine is very close to our hearts. Tasted on a number of occasions now, it continues to develop in complexity and stature, revealing the real quality of the terroir. The wine has a firm, refined structure, with plenty of deep fruit and a seriously complex finish. Drink 2014 – 2025. - armit 16.5 October 2010 Château Chasse Spleen 2009, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Moulis 12 bottles £210 IB Buy “Well-extracted Cabernet fruit, some fragrance and a touch leathery. Still very firm, shows good structure and length, a serious wine for ageing.” 2014 – 2020. - Decanter 16 Château Poujeaux 2009, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Moulis 12 bottles £210 IB “Very rich and spicy, even exotic berry fruit. Good smooth, rich flavours backed by firm, ripe tannins, lots of depth and good long-term. 2014 – 2022.” - Decanter 16.5 Château Tronquoy Lalande 2009, St Estèphe 12 bottles £240 IB Buy “Smoky black fruit nose, elegant extraction of ripe yet restrained fruit ; good length and balance. 2014 – 2020.” Decanter 16+ We found this stunning tasted at the château. Full bodied, with plenty of rich ripe fruit, balanced by firm tannins, it will develop masses of complexity. If the 2006 is anything to go by, shown at our annual tasting recently, the 2009 vintage will be very impressive in a few years time. - armit 16.5 |

Château Gloria 2009, St Julien 12 bottles £285 IB “Seductively floral aromas with wild violets ; fresh, fleshy fruit with great depth and well-balanced length.” 2014 – 2020. Jancis Robinson Loads of currant and blackberry, with mineral and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with ultrafine, very long tannins. Really builds on the palate. A racy style, with excellent length. - 17 Decanter This wine was impressive at the en primeur tastings but it seems to have gained in stature and elegance over the last few months, displaying more plump fruit and greater refinement on the finish at our recent tasting. Drink 2014 – 2025. - armit 17.5 |
