"Known by his peers as "The Maestro" his wines are renowned for their elegance, complexity and longevity." ![]() Find out more about the Estate Vintage 2004 will live long in the memory for the men and women of Bruna Giacosa is enthralled by the quality, purity and intensity of her Barbaresco and Barolos, highlighted by the single vineyard Crus. When we tasted the 2004s we were similarly captivated by the sheer vitality, concentration and balance. These wines have the potential to be some of the greatest Giacosa has produced in the last twenty years and we recommend them unreservedly. Please note that the Riserva 2004s will be released in 2009. It must also be emphasised that the varietal d’Alba wines are absolutely brilliant and a reflection of the outstanding qualities of both the 2006 and 2007 harvests. “For many estates the 2004s are without question the finest wines they have ever made. The best 2004 Barbarescos are wonderfully complete, with the sweetness of the 2000s and the greater aromatic complexity, detail and finesse of the 2001s. If that sounds particularly appealing, believe me, it is”. As ever, demand will be high, and allocations are small - preference will be given to those who buy across the range. The wines Sparkling Wine Spumante Extra Brut 2004 A bone dry, zesty wine with elegance and a wonderful balance, the nose is fresh, floral and citric whilst the palate is unhurried, relaxed but hugely refreshing. A little richness shows on the finish but this is fundamentally an aperitif style, vibrant, pure and persistent. Drink from release. Price per case (In Bond) £94 per 6 bottles - order here White Wine Roero Arneis 2007 Elegant bouquet with mineral and stonefruit notes. Richly textured in the mouth - nuances of apricot and crisp apple merge, lifted by vital acidity and a mineral overlay. Really zesty and moreish on the finish. Drink from release. Price per case (In Bond) £150 - order here Red Wines Dolcetto d'Alba 2007 Lovely bright ruby red colour and fragrant cherry nose. Ripe fruit palate - fleshy with morello cherry note and a hint of dark chocolate. Supple, easy drinking for now and over the next 2-3 years. Price per case (In Bond) £99.50 - order here Barbera d'Alba 2006 Crunchy, crisp, plummy sour cherry fruit, this is Barbera in a succulent, generous style, immediately appealing but never overdone. There is elegance here and a gentle whiff of smoke shows that there is aromatic depth that will be displayed further with a little time in bottle. For those that cannot wait, then enjoy today a wine of soft tannins, fresh acidity, bright fruit and real confidence. Drink from release. Price per case (In Bond) £140 - SOLD OUT Nebbiolo d'Alba 2006 Textbook young Nebbiolo, showing all of the trademark fragrances for which the grape is renowned alongside bright strawberry fruit, bitter cherry and rhubarb. Structure and tannin feature more but never at the expense of refreshment and this is a wine crafted in a forward style to give immediate pleasure. Drink from release. Price per case (In Bond) £150 - order here ![]() Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Neive 2004 A wonderful rich, full nose that bursts with wild fruit, this is a knockout. Sophisticated, majestic and really intense, the nose has tremendous complexity, showing spices, truffles, woodsmoke, tea and savoury notes. A solid fruit core anchors the wine whilst the aromatics lift it. This really asks for a few more years in bottle. Drink from 2010. Giacosa-s 2004 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is a superb wine. Sweet, floral, mentholated aromatics meld into an expressive core of ripe fruit, with superb length and elegant tannins to round out the finish. Made in a more linear style than the Asili and Rabaja, it doesn-t possess the expansiveness of those two wines, but it does reveal tremendous depth, harmony and balance. This pure, sweet, long Barbaresco is the best Santo Stefano in years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. Price per case (In Bond) £420 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT Barbaresco Rabajà 2004 Rich, dense and with greater opulence, this is a profound wine that seems to be an exercise in counterpoint but all in total harmony. Fragrance sits happily alongside meatiness, richness seems comfortable with refreshment, and this has concentration and scale in abundance, showing black berry and chocolate notes alongside the spices and perfumes. Totally balanced and refined and sure to require extended ageing in bottle, drink this beauty from 2014. The 2004 Barbaresco Rabaja is off the charts. It boasts phenomenal richness and complexity in its dark, brooding aromatics and powerful structure, with suggestions of roses, tar, menthol, coffee beans and baking spices that emerge from the glass in an endless display of elegance married to sheer force. Although the Rabaja will be released as a white label non-Riserva, it is very close to Riserva-level quality. From barrel it revealed just a little less length than the Asili, It will be interesting to see how the Asili and Rabaja develop in bottle. I would not be surprised to see the Rabaja merit a higher score in another year or two. This magnificent wine will especially appeal to readers who enjoy a structured style of Barbaresco. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Price per case (In Bond) £495 per 6 bottles - SOLD OUT ![]() Barolo Vigna Croera 2004 A primary, simple red and black fruit nose which seems the most immediately inviting and appealing of the line-up. Underneath lurks white chocolate and mocha notes and the darker damsons, cherries and plums. A tangy, refreshing lift on the palate and a generous, open fleshiness suggest a wine that will give pleasure in its youth. Drink from 2010. The 2004 Barolo Vigna Croera reveals pretty aromatics and notes of smoke, tar, roses, herbs and the small red fruits that are characteristic of the wines of La Morra. Made in a medium-bodied, delicate style it possesses a graceful, feminine personality and finessed tannins. Even though the wine continued to gain weight in the glass I noted that it was less expressive than when I tasted it from barrel in April 2007. The Croera is made from a high altitude plot in the Serradenari district of La Morra. This site has never been particularly well regarded for Nebbiolo. Long-time oenologist Dante Scaglione told me he expects the vines to only yield top-flight Barolo in truly great vintages. There will be no 2005 or 2006. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Price per case (In Bond) £420 per 6 bottles - order here Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba 2004 Captivating, bold wine, this is exuberant and totally brilliant. Mineral, earthy, smoky and herbal with an awesome mix of rosehip, liqueur fruits, kirsch and woodland berries, the wine continues to unfold without a false note. Very polished, balanced and with a deep dark core, this is a real tribute to the talents of the Giacosa team. Drink from 2014. Giacosa’s 2004 Barolo Falletto is so compelling it will be hard not to drink it in its youth. This gorgeous Barolo reveals a deeply structured frame layered with sweet dark fruit, mint, spice and pine. At once delicate and powerful, it is a beautifully finessed wine that is sure to provide much pleasure. A recent bottle of the 1982 is a testament to the virtues of this great site as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
