Australia

Introduction to Australia

Picture of Australia Having seen an incredible surge in popularity on international markets during the 1990s, especially in the US and the UK, Australian wine production increased tenfold during the nineties alone. By 2004, Australia had overtaken France as the principal exporter to the UK. However, an increasing reliance on supermarket trade during the early 2000s has done some damage to her reputation, with an onslaught of australian wines constantly sold on promotion on the shelves. Continually plagued by crippling drought, the country has also been at the mercy of unusual and serious frosts in 2007 and the bushfires of 2009 brought further misery to the Aussie growers. However, the wine industry is now channelling all its efforts into reviving the country's reputation as producers of fine wines and not just cheap, bulk wines destined for discount. Given the wealth of boutique wineries and incredibly skilled winemakers producing outstanding wines, it shouldn't be a hard task to revive their fortunes and win back their loyal followers.
