Austrian wine represents less than 1% of the total world wine production. Given that 75% of this is consumed on the domestic market, only a tiny amount will ever be available to export markets (0.25% of the total worldwide wine production). Up until the late 1980s, Austrian wine was considered to be sweet quaffing wine for tourists. After the wine scandal of 1985, the industry had extremely strict regulations imposed. Today, their wines are incredibly pure and of the highest quality. Gruner Veltliner continues to be the wine du jour on any reputable restaurant list.
