Introduction to Italy

Italy is a wonderful patchwork quilt of a country with incredible regionality and local traditions. Nowhere more is this apparent than in the rich profusion of indigenous grape varieties that grace the slopes and plains of many of Italy?s wine producing regions. Wine production in the country dates back over a thousand years but it wasn?t until relatively recently that a wave of young producers started to turn their attention to producing eye catching fine wines. Some did this by introducing international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay but others have worked hard with their native varieties to showcase just what a wealth of riches the country has to offer. This has had a profound effect on all aspects of Italian wine production and some would say that this is its golden age, with high quality available from house wines all the way up to the great wines of Barolo, Chianti and Brunello. We are proud to represent some of the true icons of the Italian wine scene and with the recent run of fine vintages there has never been a better time to discover some of these gems.
