The northeastern corner of Italy, on the border with Slovenia, Friuli is dominated by the production of white wines. Mostly produced from varieties introduced to the area with great success, such as Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay, which have all but supplanted the indigenous varieties: only Tocai Friulano remains in any significant quantity. The wines of the Friuli are especially popular in Austria and Germany, as well as in Italy itself, but are only now beginning to receive the attention they deserve in the UK.
Meet some of the most revered wine producers.
