"Much fuss has been made in the media of the abundant 2008 and 2009 harvests in New Zealand, in particular with the overproduction of Marlborough Sauvignon. Despite a 10% increase of plantings producing fruit for the 2009 vintage, significant crop management has controlled the situation for this year's vintage, resulting in an identical output for the 2009 harvest as for the 2008. In addition, a decrease in production of Pinot Noir and the aromatic varietals for the 2009 vintage means that demand will outstrip supply for these wines. As NZ drinkers will be only too aware, the country is not just a one-trick pony and has established a reputation for the production of extremely fine Pinots, some of which can command healthy price tags, and excellent aromatic varietals.
This year has also signalled a change in culture in the New Zealand wine industry, with far more communication and co-operation between wineries and growers to assess the correct balance of supply and demand. With this refocus in progress, things are once again looking extremely rosy for the country famed for its unmistakeable Sauvignon Blancs. Yet more exciting news from the kiwi camp is the developments in Sustainable Vinticulture. Watch this space for Seresin Estate to be first past the post with a certified organic Marlborough Sauvignon...."
