With the domaine almost completely converted to biodynamism (it will be 100% from 2009), the team had to be pre-emptive and ever vigilant and the hours that they have put it, together with the health of the vineyards are the principle reason for the brilliance of these wines.

Brilliance is indeed the best word: both in the sense of overachievement but also in the physical sense of a wine shining and gleaming with almost visible energy. This sort of intensity is very hard to achieve and typically we only see it at the very top Domaines, of which d’Angerville is unquestionably one.

The Wines

There is also a wonderful inner strength to these wines – sleek like a thoroughbred horse with no excess fat and everything in perfect, beautiful proportion. With the 2008s, we see d’Angerville moving even further ahead of the chasing pack in the Côte de Beaune.

Seasoned observers will also note a new wine in the range this year. Guillaume has purchased an additional 0.5ha of the 1er Cru Les Angles, a terrific site just below Fremiet on the Pommard side of the village. Previously, the existing tiny les Angles holding was blended into the Volnay 1er Cru tout-court but the Domaine now has enough vines to make a fully fledged cuvée which we have already enjoyed getting to know during our visits.
