Domaine Grivot 2007
Etienne Grivot finds 2007 to be a graceful, floral vintage giving seductive wines that are wholly representative of their origins. Whilst they will give pleasure young, wines of this quality will comfortably live into a second decade.

All wines are sold En Primeur and prices are quoted In Bond. Red Vosne Romanée 2007 A stylish combination of dark, swirling fruits and violet, floral perfumes, this is a textbook village Vosne. On the palate, the acidity, tannins and flesh compliment each other effortlessly and whilst clearly not profound, this is rather impressive and accomplished at this level. Drink from 2011. (40% of the blend is from Aux Ravioles on the Nuits border). A subtle touch of wood frames pretty and seductive aromas of ripe dark berry fruit, soy, hoisin and a hint of anise, all of which can be found on the round and slightly austere flavors that finish in a pure, linear and minerally finish. This is almost Cistercian in personality at present and will require a few years in bottle to flesh out but it should be capable of that because there is good mid-palate concentration. A quality villages. 2013+ - 87-89 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Scented and intense fruit on the nose, Fine tannins - pretty ambitious and wild compared with some. A hint of orange peel adds interest.Busy doing gymnastics, this wine! Drink 2011-16 – 16.5+ points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 27th January 2009 £295.00 per 12 (IB) – add to basket Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Boudots 2007 There is abundant soft, feminine charm on first acquaintance with this Boudots but just when you suspect that ripeness is getting the upper hand, the wine firms up and shows its more serious, structured side. This is a fascinating Nuits that combines elegance and muscle, offering something for everyone. Drink from 2012. (from 70+ year old vines). In relatively stark contrast to the other Nuits-based wines, this is closed and completely inexpressive at present. This is partially due to a bit of reduction but it took some aggressive swirling to obtain discreet aromas of blue fruit, violets and earth aromas though the spicy and broad-shouldered flavors are rich, full, naturally sweet and clearly powerful as there is ample mid-palate concentration and real drive on the fresh, intense and mineral suffused linear and palate staining finish. Impressive if very backward. 2015+ - 90-92 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Rich, vibrant, lots of layers and intensity. Dry finish but lots of fruit too - one of most complex 2007s. Well done! Drink 2011-18 – 17.5 points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 27th January 2009 £595.00 per 12 (IB) – add to basket Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2007 This is wine that instantly takes you into an autumnal mode, with earthy, gamey notes crying out for something rich, meaty and bloody. There is breadth and masculinity here of course but not at the expense of refinement. Drink from 2014. (50+ year old vines). A very subtle touch of oak influence sets off a pungently earthy mix of brooding red and dark berry fruit aromas trimmed in subtle spice and game notes precedes the impressively scaled and robust fullbodied flavors that are sleekly muscled and possess plenty of pop on the intense, complex, balanced and long finish. This is a powerful yet focused effort that retains a fine sense of underlying balance and this should benefit from up to a decade in the cellar first. 2017+ - 91-93 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Very lively and tense and on a tightrope - quite a feat for a grand cru! Convincing! Drink 2012-22 – 18.5 points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 27th January 2009 £725.00 per 12 (IB) – add to basket |
It wasn’t always this way – in the past, you had to wait a decade for these wines to soften up – but Etienne has worked tirelessly, fine tuning every last detail, especially in the vineyard, to produce wines that can now put pleasure alongside intellectual rigour. The wines of this great domaine are now rightfully prized and Etienne is a vigneron who is right on the top of his game.
