Domaine Leflaive 2006

This is the third year in succession where wines of the highest calibre have been produced, and the 2006s are a perfect complement to the intensity and persistence of the 2004s and the majestic power of the 2005s. They are harmonious, sensuous wines, which perfectly reflect their respective terroirs and will be drinkable before their peers in 2004 and 2005. They are very highly recommended. - John Armit

Bourgogne

£180 per 12 bottles (IB) - by allocation only

This is a lively wine that offers grapefruit and apricot on the nose and a zippy, fresh acidity on the palate. A mineral core is present through the wine and drives it forward. On the finish a light touch of vanilla and cream softens it out. For drinking before the 2004 and 2005, suggested 2008-2014.

Puligny Montrachet

£295 per 12 bottles (IB) - by allocation only

Notes of almond and green fig on the nose suggest a ripe wine with power and richness shown on the palate. This is beautifully counterbalanced by natural nervy energy and the mid-palate shows lovely purity and a dried fruit character before a lingering finish. Drinking 2009-2016.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon

£455 per 12 bottles (IB) - by allocation only

From the vineyard now worked 100% by horse comes an intense, ripe peachy wine with an attractive spicy edge. Pure, fresh and zesty with notes of apricot lingering on the palate. The acidity is pure and straight and with a couple of years in bottle, this will be terrific and shows the enormous strides made in this cru. Drinking 2010-2018

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

£340 per 6 bottles (IB) - by allocation only

A very assured, almost exuberant wine with notes of pineapple, banana skin and greengage plums. The palate shows flesh and volume and a little fat. The acidity is there but is less marked as a result. Perfumes and sweet scents fill the glass and the quality is really showing on a terrific long finish. Drinking 2010-2018.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes

£350 per 6 bottles (IB) - SOLD OUT

Combettes brings a more airy style with a beautiful grapefruit nose and a lovely sense of scale, proportion and complexity. A wine of depth with a lovely mineral finish, showing little hints of smoke and a cool, poised, precisely crafted style. Drinking 2018-2020.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles

£410 per 6 bottles (IB) - SOLD OUT

Very intense and expressive, this is an extraordinary, composed Pucelles that manages to be simultaneously rich and powerful yet elegant and tender. The fruit character has a teasingly exotic edge but wonderful floral perfumes rise from the glass in a swirling, heady mix of scents. Bewitching wine. Drinking 2010-2020.

Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru

£675 per 6 bottles (IB) - SOLD OUT

As ever, the most discreet of the Grand Crus, the Bienvenues exhibits cinnamon spice and a taut minerality in an otherwise reserved showing. There is great promise in this wine as it is densely packed with all of the elements for a long and distinguished future. Drinking 2012-2020.

Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru

£740 per 6 bottles (IB) - SOLD OUT

To type once more, Bâtard is confident and self-assured showing ripeness and exuberance at this early stage although it will clearly develop wisdom over time. A strong character with terrific intensity of fruit and a powerful, persistant finish. Drinking 2012-2020.

Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru

£940 per 6 bottles (IB) - SOLD OUT

A wine of aromatic richness, the noble Chevalier reveals its soaring, airy character alongside an intense mineral core and the compelling aromas of citric fruits, fresh cut flowers and pastries. An intellectual, driven and fascinating wine that constantly changes and evolves before your eyes, revealing layer after layer of intrigue and beauty. Drinking 2012-2020.

domaine leflaive courtyard

vintage 2006 at Domaine Leflaive

Another year has passed at Domaine Leflaive and the reputation of this great estate continues to reach new heights. 2006 was a much tougher growing season and the harvest forced the team to move quickly and decisively because of the ever present threat of rot: biodynamic vines cannot be sprayed with anti-rot treatment after all! The entire domaine’s holdings were picked in 7 days, starting from 20th September. This is breathtaking speed and physically very demanding. The team can be hugely proud of the terrific results of their work. The sorting table was put to extremely good use although some noble rot was retained, which has added a little extra complexity and roundness to the wines. At harvest, good acidities and natural ripeness were noted and after the complexity of the growing season, the vinification and élévage were thankfully unproblematic, with even-paced malolactic fermentations and steady aromatic evolution in barrel.

At this stage, it is already clear that we are looking at another very fine vintage at Domaine Leflaive. The 2006s will almost certainly be more forthcoming in their youth than the two preceeding vintages but with wines of this stature, those who like to mature their white burgundies in cellar should have nothing to fear regarding the vintage’s longevity.
