Richard Fontaine is one of the most honest vignerons you could ever meet and a tasting with him is always instructive as regards the true qualities of a vintage. He noted that for purity and raciness that his 2007s were in a more classic vein although by analysis, acidity levels between the two vintages were very similar. It is the extra degree of ripeness attained, due largely to the fine end of season conditions, that allows Richard to draw a parallel with one of his most successful vintages, the 2002. A quick inspection of his 2002 Maltroie confirmed the case – concentration, ripeness and yet still plenty of freshness and vibrancy. This remains one of the most consistently excellent sources of Chassagne at a time when some of the most famous names in the village are less dependable.
