Jean-Marie Fourrier started harvesting on 25th September in fine conditions, with all fruit back at the Domaine by 2nd October. The extended late season had been a huge plus point but with the hang time stretching to 110 days, the vegetative cycle had finished and there was no more to be gained. Jean-Marie admitted that 2008 was one of the toughest growing seasons he had experienced with the constant threat of mildew and vine maladies but once again, this most committed and observant of growers put in the hard yards and has produced wines that bear little resemblances to those of a challenging growing season. These tremendous Pinots have a crystalline, transparent quality that emphasises Jean-Marie’s perfectionist approach to his vineyard work. He sees the young wines as rough diamonds, considering how much work was needed and how long it has taken to reveal all of the facets of their character but as ever, he is being typically modest – these are already some of the finest treasures of the Côte d’Or.
