domaine francois faiveley - burgundy 2006

Domaine François Faiveley - 2006 En Primeur

Nestled unassumingly on a quiet street in beautiful Nuits St. Georges, Faiveley, headed by the suave and welcoming Erwan, is quite an operation. With stunning cellars and many glorious holdings from Gevrey to Pommard, via some brilliant Grand Crus, Erwan and his new team have everything that a Burgundian could desire. 2006 is the first vintage under technical director Jerome Flous and he has certainly lived up to expectation. A range of vinous treats have been crafted which will all age very well but will certainly be more giving in their youth than the 2005s. The Faiveley style is still unquestionably one of the longer-lived but the finesse and precision that we have seen increasing over recent vintages is very much in evidence. Of the wines, the Clos des Issarts represents terrific value when considered amongst its peers and the awesome Clos de Bèze is once again one of the true greats of the region.

Red Wines

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts 2006

Savoury, meaty nose. Really rich and boldly structured palate with lovely clove spice notes and briary fruit flavours. Grippy and full bodied with excellent persistence and texture. Subtle mineral notes emerge with a slighly roasted character on the finish. Plenty of new oak adds to the overall savoury effect. Great potential Drink from 2010 - armit

(a monopole of the Domaine). A subtle touch of wood and moderately hightoned dark berry fruit and violet aromas are in perfect keeping with the sweet and mineral-infused middle weight flavors that offer good if not truly distinguished depth and precision though I very much like the intensity and length. We’ll see if this improves its overall sense of definition. 2014+ - 89-91 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008

Corton Clos des Cortons Grand Cru 2006

Shy, teasing nose - on the mouth refined, intense briary fruits, with a spicy overlay. Really intense, structured and concentrated flavours with loads of energy and persistent minerality. Totally brooding and impressive - will need 10 years to come round. Simply one of the greatest Cortons. Drink from 2014 - armit

Discreet if not invisible wood frames earthy red pinot fruit that leads to serious, vibrant and wonderfully intense flavors that possess impressive size and weight and a bit less rusticity than usual, all wrapped in a gorgeously long and deep finish. I find it interesting that this is a bit less structured than a number of the grands crus in the range as this is normally among the most age worthy wines here, not that this is exactly a shrinking violet. 2018+ - 91-93 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008

Echézeaux Grand Cru 2006

Lovely apple-wood, smoky nose - very Pinot with its savoury gamey nose and touches of demarera sugar. Plenty of zip and bold fruit on the palate, more lacey than the Chambertins, but with plenty of drive and potential. Drink from 2012. - armit

(from the sub-climat En Orveaux). Noticeable but not dominant wood toast tussles a bit with the smoky and highly spiced black pinot fruit that precedes the rich, full and notably powerful flavors that despite the size retain a fine sense of detail on the slightly austere finish. This has impressive raw material but it’s on the woody side at present and while it should successfully absorb the oak in time, it is presently marked by it. 2018+ - 90-93 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008

Price per case in bond          £310 per 6 - SOLD OUT

Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru 2006

Some new wood on the nose - in the mouth plenty of blackberry/cherry and spice notes with a dry, rich structure. A  bit reserved and introverted at the moment, but underlying power, fruit and tension all bodes welll for a bright future. The finish is encouragingly long and defined. Drink from 2012. - armit

This too is discreetly wooded with an elegant, cool, reserved and stony red pinot fruit nose that offers a beautiful variety of layers where the following energetic medium-bodied flavors also brim with an intense minerality and excellent detail on the driving and tension-filled finish. This is wonderfully alive and altogether classic in style and like the Clos de Vougeot, this will require up to two decades to reach its full potential. A stunner fashioned in an old school style. 2021+ - 91-94 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008

Price per case in bond          £320 per 6 - SOLD OUT

Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2005

New oak on the nose - very compote black fruits in the mouth, even a touch of liquorice. Opens out and evolves with spice and bramble fruit notes. Full bodied and rich, this will need time for the fruit to merge with the tannins and show its paces. Drink from 2013. - armit

(from both Mazis Haut and Bas). A distinctly sauvage and somber dark berry fruit nose gives off notes of iron tinged warm earth, underbrush, crushed herbs and a hint of smoke followed by rich, full and moderately wooded full-bodied flavors that are notably powerful and supported by very firm tannins on the serious, long and backward finish. This too will require upward of two decades of cellar time so don’t buy this if you’re not prepared to be patient. 2021+ - 92-94 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2005

Bold oak and dark fruits nose. Really rich, ripe entry - plenty of intensity and structure but also powerful and persistent black fruits and minerals. This is a broad shouldered, full-bodied wine with tremendous potential. Brilliantly expressive of its terroir. Drink from 2014. - armit

A completely backward but superbly complex nose displays layered aromas that run to game and underbrush as well as ripe red and dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of wood toast that give way to rich, sweet and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of muscle and real volume on the explosive, textured and sappy finish that is impressively concentrated and wonderfully long. There is ample structure here as well though it’s largely buffered by all of the mid-palate extract and I particularly like the depth. A serious wine that will live for decades. 2021+ - 92-95 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound # 29, Jan. 2008
