Domaine Georges Roumier - 2006 En Primeur

There was an advert on television a year or so back with a certain Danish beer being prevented by the locals from being shipped to export markets and doubtless the good folk of Chambolle feel much the same way every time a truck pulls out of the gates of Domaine Roumier. Their distress though is our delight and once again, Christophe Roumier has amply demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. He compares the vintage to 2000 for its fruit character but considers that 2006 has more grip, is less sweet and portrays the differences in terroir much better. He is another who apologises that he has made less wine – or perhaps he is making a small concession to keep his neighbours happy?

White Wine

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2006

Christophe’s vines are in the same western sector as Patrick Bize’s and both have made exceptional wines. This is very stylish with notes of spice and mint and a gentle peachiness. Unforced but natural strong, this invigorates the taster and shows real completeness. Drink from 2011.

Red Wines

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras  2006

Cherry and raspberry fruit suggest a wine of easy charms but the minerality of the palate soon shakes off that notion, ushering in a wine of seriousness and classic austerity that will need time to loosen up and let its hair down. Drink from 2012.

Chambolle Musigny 2006

Showing abundant red fruit liqueur notes and an easy, natural and attractive style, this is textbook Chambolle that combines fruit, minerality, fragrance and elegance in an effortlessly talented way. Drink from 2010.

Morey St Denis Clos de la Bussière 2006

Where Chambolle is all cleanliness and purity, this is cut from a wilder cloth, showing rosehip and redcurrant fruit and a meaty, animal palate. There is considerable grip here and a real sense of dynamism but despite its more unruly side, Christophe has easily tamed it, retaining the same lightness of touch and precision that is his calling card throughout the range. Drink from 2011.

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2006

It is tempting to lie and say that this wine was a shocker as demand for it is so extreme that it causes more problems than are solved by including it in the list! However, an accurate description of it can only but mention that once again, we are on hallowed turf, with teasing textures, haunting fragrances and hushed promise. Drink from 2013.

Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2006

Christophe’s parcel is in the Mazoyères sector of Charmes and the spice, pepper and aniseed notes show this more savoury style. A little subdued at present but a wine in which to keep quiet confidence. Drink from 2013.

Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru 2006

A lively intense nose with noticeable earth, iron and mineral notes. This is a fabulous Ruchottes, very animated and with crisp acidity. Long, expressive and sure to gain further in depth and volume. Drink from 2013.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2006

Tasted from cask, this is still a brawny, vigorous wine that needs to find a little polish but the raw ingredients are terrific, showing natural intensity, wild fruit and a mineral core. A wonderful wine from a master of his art. Drink from 2014.
