Bruno Giacosa, New Releases 2010
Vintage Report
2009 vintage
The 2009 vintage was a warm year and many of Piedmont’s leading producers were concerned, at first, that they would make over ripe wines. However, ample water reserves from melted winter snow and spring rains allowed producers to make balanced and attractive wines with fresh acidity and ripe tannins. The warm weather continued throughout the harvest which allowed grapes to ripen fully producing wines with balance, structure and finesse. The quality of Dolcetto was remarked upon in particular, most agreeing that it was better than the previous vintage. Over-all 2009 is a very promising year.
2008 vintage
Wines produced in the 2008 vintage have attractive, elegant fruit, supple tannins and refreshing acidity with fine balance, despite challenging weather at the beginning of the year. Thanks to a long period of dry weather at the end of the growing season the grapes ripened fully and evenly, whilst maintaining an excellent balance. Careful attention in the vineyard was all-important but growers who controlled yields and picked the healthiest grapes produced very elegant, poised wines which will provide rewarding drinking over many years to come.
2007 vintage
The 2007 vintage had the lowest total crop ever recorded in Italy and produced wines with real concentration and charm. The issue in Piedmont was hail, which caused widespread damage in the vineyards but thereafter there was a long warm summer which resulted in an early harvest and perfectly mature grapes. From the start, the wines have shown a very pure and expressive fruit character with rich, ripe and supple tannins. They demonstrate immense finesse and, as ever, carry the most remarkable sense of provenance and individuality. The wines are characterised by medium to high alcohol and medium acidity, but with bold flavours and aromas and a fine balance. There is no doubt that these wines are of very fine quality, with great potential for medium term aging and drinking but will at the same time remain expressive throughout their life.
2004 vintage
The 2004 vintage is one of the greatest years in the last half century. Excellent fruit set in the spring was followed by a brilliant summer and an even ripening period. Conditions were perfect for producing outstanding Nebbiolo from the long, extended growing season with bright, dry sunny days and cool nights without extremes of temperature. Green pruning was essential but careful control of yields produced a superb harvest. The resulting wines are very concentrated with great complexity, wonderful aromatic intensity and superb balance, which is the best for many years. Very pleasant and harmonious today, the top quality wines of this vintage have the structure and potential for optimum evolution over the next 15 to 20 years.
