Jean Grivot - Burgundy 2006 En Primeur wines

“Très Pinot, très terroir, tendre et aimable” were the words of Etienne Grivot as he beamed across his barrels. Harmony, balance and freshness-, Etienne’s obsessions, have all been achieved as has his desire to produce wines to be drunk rather than simply tasted and scored. These are charming wines from a vintage that will not require an age to mature and will always be enjoyed at table. We asked Etienne what his secret was and he offered us this priceless pearl of wisdom: “You must have the courage to do nothing” (referring to elevage) Sometimes it’s tempting to tell your cellarhands to go and rack because there is nothing else to do. Better to send them home!”

Fine black fruit nose - palate rich and structured with firm mineral, almost iron notes. Layered and quite intense with ripe black fruits, grainy tannins and an overall savoury character. This is long, balanced and quite intense - a brilliant village Vosne. Drink from 2010.

From the Vosne end of the appellation, near Malconsorts, this is a mineral and refined Nuits. Lovely black fruits on the nose and palate with a broad structure and mineral intensity. A really sweet kernel of black fruits - quite juicy and succulent, but with real grip and length. Drink from 2011.

A lovely violet and mineral nose. Firm palate dominated by black fruits and a touch of pomegranate - very expressive. Noticeable step up in quality and intensity from the village wine - really fleshy and balanced, with delicate mineral notes. Delicious briary fruit finish. Drink from 2011.

Restrained nose - on the palate attractive black cherry fruit attack. Dry and full bodied, with a tight mineral and grainy tannic structure. This is really vital and polished if a little shy compared to the Brûlées at this stage. Lovely long finish hints at the potential. Drink from 2011.

A very shy nose but a really piercing, lively palate - intensely mineral and structured. There is a real iron fist here but the underlying bramble and morello cherry fruit is all there. Power and intensity gives a haunting quality to the wine on the finish. Potentially very fine Vougeot in what is often a variable Grand Cru. Drink from 2013.

Beautiful violet, perfumed nose – a lovely lilting character on the palate with a melée of red and black fruits, crunchy apple acidity and delicate minerality. Poise and precision are hallmarks to this wine, which really expresses the terroir differences with the Vougeot. Drink from 2013.
