Domaine Michel Lafarge - 2006 En Primeur

Both Michel and Frédéric Lafarge remember the ideal conditions in which they harvested. They refer to 2006 as “Millésime de charme” and are also in the camp of growers who consider that it really shows the terroir well and will give much pleasure in its youth. However, at this point, it is only right to remind ourselves that we are talking about Lafarge here- these are never flippant wines for casual, premature acquaintance. Wines of this stature demand respect and with the 2006 reds, whilst they may well be for drinking before the 2005s, a good 10 years for anything at village level or above will be no problem at all. These are, after all, wines from a living legend.

White Wines

Meursault 2006

Clean stonefruits on the palate with gentle oak touches and a savoury finish.  Clean and elegant village wine. Drink from release.

Somewhat surprisingly, the nose is riper still with a moderately exotic aromatic profile of peach, apricot and mango that continues onto the rich, full and naturally sweet flavors that possess good concentration and dry extract levels while culminating in a minerally, balanced and sappy finish. Attractive if not overly complex. 2010+ - 87-89 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Meursault Vendanges Selectionées 2006

A lifted, fruity nose with a touch of lime blossom. Floral and mineral flavours on the palate, with fine acidity and lively stonefruit flavours. Really quite weighty and serious, whilst also being forward and integrated. Drink from 2009.

This is riper still and the ripeness translates into openly exotic aromas that include mango, papaya and pineapple that complement the rich, full and sweet flavors brimming with buckets of dry extract that confer a textured, even silky mouth feel onto the somewhat longer and very sappy finish. This is very round and forward and should drink well early. 2010+ - 87-90 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Red Wines

Bourgogne Rouge 2006

Clean, spiced red berry nose. Dry, racy mouthfeel with bold red berry fruit and touches of earthiness. Nice minerals hints and crunchy acidity make for a vital and satisfying wine. Drink from release.

A more reserved red berry and earth-infused nose slides into delicious, precise and nicely voluminous flavors that are dusty, mouth coating and solidly complex on the pure and linear finish. Also worth a look for a serious and cellar-worthy Bourgogne. 2011+ - 85-87 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Volnay 2006

Lovely lifted violet nose with bundles of forest fruits. Clean and crisp in the mouth with briary fruit flavours and subtle minerality. Really energetic and precise with medium bodied weight and good length - excellent village wine. Drink from 2009.

Volnay Vendanges Selectionnées 2006

Fine perfumed nose – a touch herbal with strawberry fruit notes on the nose and palate. Quite dense and savoury with a fine cut of fresh acidity and intense red berry and violet notes on the middle and finish. Drink from 2010.

A seductive and layered nose of red and blue pinot fruit aromas complement the textured and dusty flavors that possess better structural ripeness on the detailed, mouth coating and moderately intense flavors that, like the straight villages, are very Volnay in character. 2012+ - 87-89 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Bourgogne Passetoutgrains L’Exception 2006

This is sourced from 82 year-old vines just outside Volnay. The nose offers concentrated aromas of black cherry and rhubarb but on the palate is the real surprise with a tremendous depth and breadth for a humble PTG. The Pinot character dominates over the Gamay despite almost an exact 50:50 blend. Once again, the great Lafarge shows what can be done with talent, old vines and experience. Drink from release.

Beaune 1er cru Aigrots 2006

A serious nose of plums, damsons, spices and minerals, the Aigrots is a recent addition to the Lafarge portfolio and is a brilliantly situated terroir adjacent to the famous Clos des Mouches. The proximity to Pommard comes across in the structured, long lived style. Drink from 2012.

A notably ripe nose also reflects pretty notes of red and blue pinot fruit but here the aromas are slightly cooler with a subtle minerality that can also be found on the finely detailed flavors that display fine verve on the impressively long finish. If this can add a bit of depth with time, it should merit the upper end of my predicted range. 2013+ - 88-90 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Price per case in bond          £345 - add to basket

Beaune 1er cru Grèves 2006

Red berry and cinnamon nose. Lively briary fruits on the mouth with spicy earth notes and finely grained tannins. Generous and really quite plush on the middle palate and finish - this is a serious and full bodied Beaune. Drink from 2010.

Price per case in bond          £370 - SOLD OUT

Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Mitans 2006

Perfumed violets and soft red fruits dominate on the nose and palate. This is really quite intense and bold. Relatively full bodied and layered, with a fine, ripe structure and subtle mineral notes. Fleshy and savoury with a smooth berry finish. Drink from 2011.

A background touch of wood sets off a refined, pure and airy nose of mostly red berry fruits though hints of underbrush and anise creep in and then continue onto the sweet, intense detailed and pungently mineral flavors that possess lovely balance and length on the linear finish. A wine of finesse and understatement. 2013+ - 89-92 points, Allen Meadow's Burghound

Volnay 1er cru Clos du Château des Ducs 2006

A somewhat shy nose, with a touch of dogrose and forest fruits. Very mineral on the palate with crisp bramble fruits and a fleshy mouth feel. Very precise and elegant, with plenty of body and weight. Lovely texture and mineral notes, with a long, refined finish. Top quality Premier Cru. Drink from 2012.

Price per case in bond          £495

Volnay 1er cru Clos des Chênes 2006

Tight, brooding nose with mineral notes. Dry, grippy entry on the palate, then forest fruit flavours start to emerge, along with assertive mineral notes. Really quite reserved at this stage, but there is real depth and intensity to this wine. Long, refined, energetic finish with a touch of mussel shells and spice. Needs time, very impressive. Drink from 2013.

Price per case in bond          £540 - SOLD OUT

Pommard 1er cru Pézerolles 2006

Plum fruit nose. Very red fruits palate with earthy notes and some spice. Grippy, grainy structure and nuances of cherries emerge on the finish. Statuesque, satisfying Pommard. Drink from 2013.
