Mischief & Mayhem - Burgundy 2006 En Primeur

After making its debut being pitched into the melée of the 2005 campaign, Mischief & Mayhem makes its second foray into the UK en primeur market with a terrific range of 2006s. The last 12 months have seen breathtaking activity from the tireless Michael & Fiona Ragg – racing up and down the Côte sourcing barrels; blending and raising the wines; fixing contracts; selling the wines with emphatic success in the hardest markets of the world – UK, USA and the Far East; opening a cellar door tasting room after renovating a beautiful but disused building next door and so on. Such energy, drive and ambition are hard to ignore and it is a credit to Michael that his passion and focus on his beloved Burgundy remains completely undiminished. He also understands that the M&M concept is unlikely to appeal to everyone but he is rightly convinced that anyone who actually tastes his wines can’t fail to like them and so it has proved over the last year whenever we have shown them to private clients, sommeliers and the press. These are wines that are very easy to make friends with and if this is the modern face of Burgundy, the purists really have nothing to fear.

Crisp sage-apple nose and a dry clean stonefruits palate. There is a lovely interplay between the crisp acidity and the attractive. Well balanced and fruity with weight and texture. Drink from release.

Tight nose with hints of stonefruit and nettles. Ripe, dry, racy entry with a touch of ginger and citric fruit emphasis. Forward and accessible with good vitality and definition. For those who prefer their Meursault in the more refined and restrained style. Drink from release.

Classic floral notes with noticeable coconut oak touches. On the palate, the wine is lively with citric and stonefruit flavours and a clean, lifting acidity. Good definition and style here. Drink from release.

A dry, flinty nose - quite mineral in the mouth with subtle white peach fruit. Lovely energy and zest with crispness, weight and texture. Very pleasing citric and stony character with a fine dry stonefruit finish. Drink from 2009.

Very lifted and fragrant nose - plenty of stonefruits and floral (almost Puligny) notes. Quite rich and creamy on the palate with texture and energy. A sweet core of peach fruit with nuances of marzipan. Really savoury and satisfying. Drink from 2009.

More floral on the nose overlaid with creamy notes. Weighty mouthfeel, even nuances of crème caramel. Pure vein of acidity really lifts the wine and the creamy oak and weight of fruit makes for a succulent and assertive style. Drink from 2009.

Attractive bramble fruit nose and palate, also touches of cherry fruit. Crunchy apple acidity and fine grained tannins wrap around the fruit for a pleasing and elegant glass of Pinot. Drink from release.

Notes of black fruit compote with a touch of earthiness. Youthful and sappy with touches of spice on the finish. Good all round Nuits style and already extremely approachable. Drink from release.

Fragrant fruit-driven nose with a touch of violets. Bold black fruit flavours on the palate and fine structure giving a vital and enticing mouth feel. Touch of lavender and a lingering bramble fruit finish round off in style. Drink from release.

Lovely sweet cinnamon spice and black fruit nose. Lively palate of bramble fruit wrapped around a mineral core. Very polished, weighty and defined. Vosne grip and intensity here from a top Premier Cru which borders Richebourg. Drink from 2009.
