EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Matetic Vineyards, Chile

Ripe Gooseberry, mineral, grapefruit, lemon and herb bouquet. A tart palate with ripe grapefruit, asparagus and gooseberry flavours and refreshing bright acidity. Integrated, complex, elegant and long. Good.

Chianti Classico, Italy 2009

Querciabella

Biodynamics, – the extreme and, to its critics, cranky wing of organic farming, – may be unproven scientifically, but it's been taken up by a remarkable number of the world's best wine producers. And the very swanky Tuscan Querciabella, is one. It's a no-expense-spared kind of estate that makes some of Italy's most sophisticated and straightforwardly gorgeous wines, such as this effortlessly pure and refined Chianti.

Barolo Monprivato 2006

Giuseppe Mascarello

While there is a great deal of very assertive tannin and acidity here, and while drinking this now would be an act of vinous infanticide, there is already supreme elegance and depth to the pure cherry fruit plus a touch of Asian spice that promises a magnificent future.

Seresin Leah Pinot Noir 2009

Marlborough, New Zealand

New World wines, including the Kiwis, do age. Seresin's Rachel popped up here last year and now it is Leah's turn. Named after Michael Seresin's daughter and made from grapes grown in all three Seresin vineyards, this delicious 2009 is the entry-level wine for the estate. But you'd never know, as this French oak barrique-aged pinot noir bursts with the sort of juicy, spicy, strawberrt-laced fruit that Cote d'Or worshippers adore. Enjoy this lively, 14 per cent pinot noir now with big food, or keep it in the cellar for a few years.

Gimonnet Fleuron 2005 Brut 1er Cru, Champagne

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils

The Gimonnet style is serious, creamy-textured, smells of white blossom and is tightly wound and tingling with unleashed nervous energy. Simpy superb. Punches above its price.

Riesling Hochgewächs Siebeldinger Im Sonnenschien 2009

Theodorus,Pfalz

Everyone should have at least one thrilling German riesling in their festive wine rack, and this delicious 2009, one of the Pfalz's best vintages in recent years, gets my vote. Off-dry rieslings, including this dryer trocken-style edition, are perfect festive food whites, equally happy with ham or goose, accompanied by a fruity sauce...

Ornellaia 2008

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

A stunning blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from Tuscany. Silky, supple and seductive, it is alcoholic too, but so finely wrought you'd never notice.  Resist the temptation to drink it now and stash it away for at least ten years.

Quinta da Falorca Reserva 2004

Quinta Vale das Escadinhas

Expressive, almost eucalyptus top note to cassis and mint, with a charry background. The palate has impressive ripeness, the cappuccino silkiness of the oak adding creaminess to blackcurrant pastille fruit. Drink 2011 - 2018.

McLaren Vale Cabernet 2008

Dowie Doole, McLaren Vale

Red plum, oaky, Port and red fruit aroma. Old fashioned, sweet, dense and juicy wine, which is very appealing. Everything is in the right place. It has a voluptuous feeling in the mouth, a fresh finish, and firm, chewy tannins. Drink 2011-2020.

Quinta da Falorca Rosé 2010

Quinta Vale das Escadinhas

I highly recommend a Dão rosé from Touriga Nacional specialists Quinta da Falorca, which I recently sampled at home.   Made from 100% Touriga Nacional, the cranberry bright Quinta da Falorca Rosé 2010 exhibits gently creamy red cherry and berry fruit tempered by mouth-sluicing mineral acidity.  Lovely freshness, clarity and precision, plus it’s dry which, together with its subtle savoury complexity, made it a great partner for my salad nicoise.  I’m told it’s terrific with other fish dishes high in omega 3, like grilled sardines or salmon.  One of the best rosés I’ve tasted in a while.

Grüner Veltliner Strasse Hasel 2010

Roter Veltliner 2010

Weingut Eichinger, Kamptal

Birgit is a gifted winemaker, and her Grüner Veltliner Strasse Hasel 2010.. is so pure and crystal-bright it feels like it’s been fashioned by elves. And if you fancy branching out, Eichinger Roter Veltliner 2010 is scented and snappy like a pink grapefruit that’s been promoted to the Queen of Citrus.

Saint Romain 2007

Maison Deux Montille

Run by brother-and-sister team Alix and Etienne Montille, this impressive négociant (a spin-off from Domaine de Montille) has put together a fine roster of wines since it started out in the early 2000s. This St-Romain is a good illustration of their winemaking style: it's impeccably refined, with a mineral edge to the taut, nervous acidity and a degree of richness coming through on the finish.
