Ornellaia 2007 and Le Volte 2008

Ornellaia, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s renowned flagship wine, is produced from hand-picked grapes harvested on the estate from unique vineyard sites. Made in very limited quantities and vinified with great care and meticulous attention to detail, Ornellaia is rightly considered as one of the great wines of Bolgheri and indeed Italy.

The new release of Ornellaia is from the much anticipated 2007 vintage. Its incredible exuberance, charm and vitality immediately impressed us when we tasted the wine for the first time in the autumn and it was clear that this was not only an exceptional Ornellaia but also one of the finest Italian wines produced in this vintage.

We expect intense demand for this offer so please advise us of your requirements as soon as you can.The wines will be shipped to the UK in mid-2010.

Ornellaia 2007

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot The style of the wine is one of beguiling approachability and incredible charm. Dark, ripe cassis fruits dominate the nose, with complex notes of spice intermingled with wild herbs. Magnificent, ripe, blackberry fruit flavours are supported by firm yet incredibly smooth, rich tannins which gives this full bodied, yet elegant wine, an aristocratic quality. Intensely rich and harmonious, it is surprisingly expressive given its youth but there is no doubt that this wine has the potential to age for twenty years or more.

2007 vintage

The year began with a very mild winter with less rainfall than normal resulting in an early bud break. Spring was also mild with rain coming just at the right moment which led to an early flowering. Summer finally started with a July which was hot and dry but this was followed by a relatively cool August which slowed the ripening of the grapes. A warm September with bright blue skies and brilliant sunshine were the perfect conditions for a gradual ripening of the grapes, creating intense aromas and concentrated flavours.

Harvest and Vinification

The harvest began on 27th August with Merlot from the youngest vineyards and ended in the first week of October with Cabernet Sauvignon. In line with Ornellaia’s unique and meticulous approach, individual clusters were hand-picked and then sorted by hand on a double sorting table, before and after desteming. This was followed by a very gentle pressing. Each grape variety and vineyard block was then vinified separately. The final blend was assembled after twelve months in small barriques, followed by a further sixmonths in barriques and six months of ageing in bottle.

Le Volte 2008

We are very pleased to accompany the new release of Ornellaia with its impressive sibling, Le Volte, made with exactly the same philosophy and attention to detail as Ornellaia itself. A unique cuvée, Le Volte brings togetherthe best terroirs of Tuscany combining Sangiovese, with its a Mediterranean character, with the structure and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and the softness of Merlot. Maturation in small oak barriques for ten months brings harmony and elegance to this very attractive wine.

50% Sangiovese, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon The 2008 vintage has produced wines with great structure, depth and concentration, and the Le Volte 2008 is particularly full and opulent. On the nose intense, wild berry fruits are intermingled with aromatic, spicy notes. On the palate, the tannins are supple and integrated and the flavours are ample and dense with notes of herbs and wild berries. A lingering finish completes this very appealing wine which, given its pedigree, is also great value for money.

2008 vintage

The 2008 growing season was marked by a very hot and dry summer which lasted until the beginning of September. These conditions proved perfect for an optimal veraison while cool nights encouraged the production of aromatic compounds and colour. Cool north winds in mid-September, with bright sunshine, were ideal for late-ripening varieties such as Sangiovese which were able to complete their ripening gradually, accumulating significant levels of aroma and flavour compounds.
