Les Pensées de Lafleur 2008

It is our pleasure to announce the release of Les Pensées de Lafleur 2008, the second wine of the great Château Lafleur, at £250 per six. Pomerol, and Château Lafleur in particular, has enjoyed considerable success in 2008 and Les Pensées is once again up amongst the top performing wines of the right bank and yet still priced below its rival second wines such as Le Petit Cheval and Chapelle d’Ausone

Notes of soft red fruits, licquorice, spice and pepper on the nose, this is immediately far more forthcoming than its elder sibling. The tannins are supple and juicy and the wine is engaging on the palate, with abundant style and an easy, friendly manner. On the finish, the wine firms up a little, reminding you that there is more to this than simple pleasures but without ever taking them away. A wonderful balancing act, giving the option of both early drinking and longer term cellaring. Drink 2015-2025 61% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc - armit

The second wine, the 2008 Les Pensees de Lafleur, a blend of 61% Merlot and 39% Cabernet Franc, is a richly fruity, seductive, sensual effort that should be drinkable young, and last for 10-15 years.. The tiny Lafleur vineyard, which was harvested between October 8-14, produced a wine with an atypically high percentage of Cabernet Franc. Proprietor Guinadeau stated that the Cabernet Franc was among the finest he had ever harvested. - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate # 182 Apr 2009, erobertparker.com, 89-91 points

A blend of 61% Merlot and 39% Cabernet Franc, this is quite tight on the nose, the Cabernet Franc more pronounced than the Merlot at the moment. There is a touch of clay, of seaweed perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied, silky tannins once again, very well balanced with crisp black fruits and then on the back palate, the controlled power of the Cabernet Franc hits you. Very fine. Tasted April 2009. - Neal Martin’s Wine Journal, erobertparker.com, 89-91 points

As with Lafleur a touch of austerity but the dominance of Merlot (61%) gives a fruity expression to the nose and roundness on the palate. Finishes firm and long. Drink 2014-2023. - James Lawther MW, Decanter 16.5 Points

Sweet plum, strawberry and raspberry fruit character on the nose and palate. Full and silky, with lovely fruit and a long finish. Minerally undertone. - James Suckling, Wine Spectator 88-91 points

more about Lafleur

Patience was the key to success with the Guineaudeau family having the courage to wait well into October before commencing harvest, finally bringing in the last Cabernet on 15th October and thus benefitting fully from the glorious fine weather that arrived in the region during September and October. To put things into context, for the 2007 vintage, the last Cabernet was picked on 30th September.
