History

The history of Quinta Vale Das Escadinhas dates back over 5 generations when the Quinta was established by the Costa Barros de Figueiredo family.

The Estate

The estate spans 23 hectares in the Silgueiros sub-region of Dão, located 10 miles from Viseu. The four vineyards – Vale das Escadinhas, Barreiro, Esmoitada and Falorca – cover 13 hectares on the steep banks of the Dão river facing south with full exposure to the sun. All have been reconverted over the past 30 years, coinciding with a huge investment project in the winery with a state-of-the-art vinification facility.

The vines have an average age of 30 years, with one hectare of 50 year old vines. The main grape grown is the star red grape of Portugal, Touriga Nacional, a complex grape best known for Port that has a great potential for ageing. Also planted are Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro Preto, Tinta Pinheira and Jaen and the white varietals Encruzado and Malvasia. The Estate has a further 10 hectares planted with olive, hazelnut and pine trees.

The Wines

We have been importing wines from Quinta Vale Das Escadinhas since 2005 and have been slowly building our portfolio. The wines have won several awards, including accolades in the UK; the Reserva 2001 was recently voted into The 50 Best Wines from Portugal by Simon Woods & Viniportugal, and TNAC was listed in the Times Top 100 Winter List by Jane MacQuitty. We are very proud to add E-Falorca, Quinta da Falorca Rosé and Garrafeira 2003 to our portfolio recently.

The year turned out to be fantastic, with high quality grapes that allowed us to make our first top wine, Garrafeira. It was very well received by the market place in general, meaning for us in particular, the first step towards producing fine wines that people will really be able to enjoy.

In the Spring of 2000, the three of us were tasting the 1999 wine, as there were doubts on releasing it. It was a very hot day, and the wine was in an old cellar, as the new one was not yet ready. We tasted the wine, it was very pleasant, and we sort of lost all the pressure of the responsibility of how good the fi rst wine should be, and evolved to the stage of just wanting to let people drink and enjoy it, as we were doing by then, on that very hot day. That was the fi rst Falorca wine, after 20 years of just selling the grapes.

We are working to consistently make excellent wines that people will enjoy. We search for perfection, and our work with the help of nature and the terroir will certainly take us to the stage of creating the perfect wine. On our way, the ideas, the support and the company of our partners and customers will keep on being very valuable to us. We want to take part in the Dão Region evolution, returning us to the important place it once had.
