La Rioja Alta

Viña Ardanza Reserva 2001

Introduction

Our Rioja Alta Wine Selection

In 1890, five Basque and Rioja-based vine growers created Sociedad Vinicola de La Rioja Alta in the Haro region of Rioja, which later became known as La Rioja Alta SA. The Estate has two wineries: the Haro winery is the original, traditional wine making facility and is now primarily used for ageing the wines, and the second winery in Labastida was built in 1996 and is a state-of-the-art modern winemaking facility

The Winery

The vineyards are located in the finest sites of the Rioja Alta area and 360 hectares of limestone soil are planted with Tempranillo and Graciano vines. Established in 1890, La Rioja Alta owns 360 hectares of Tempranillo and Graciano vines in the finest sites of the Rioja Alta region. The estate also owns a separate 63 hectares of Garnacha in the warmer Rioja Baja appellation, which will be used specifically in the Ardanza blend once the vineyard has reached maturity.

The Vineyards

The Estate produces 3 Reservas and 2 Gran Reservas, as well as the unique Marques de Haro wine that is the passion of the winemaker, Julio Sáenz.

Viña Ardanza Reserva 2001

£299.88 DP per case In Bond  Buy

Vibrant dark cherry red with an iodine rim. Intense aromas of spice with balsamic and nutty notes, and hints of coconut, vanilla, cinnamon and mint chocolate. The refi ned and complex bouquet is reminiscent of the 1964 Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial. Structured and perfectly balanced on the palate with silky tannins, leading onto a long, lingering fi nish.

The 2001 harvest was limited in quantity but exceptional in quality. Ideal temperatures ensured that the grapes matured in perfect health. Smaller, more concentrated berries resulted in a wine of intense colour and complex aromas with excellent ageing potential. The Viña Ardanza 2001 was produced from rigorously selected Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. The blend is 80% Tempranillo sourced from the 30 year old Viña Ardanza vineyard located in Fuenmayor in Rioja Alta, and 20% Garnacha from the ‘La Pedriza’ vineyard in Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. The wine was aged for three years in American oak with an average age of three years. It was racked by hand six times and then bottled in September 2005.
