Torre de Oña

Leandro Vázquez, a Cuban and citizen of the world, when visiting Spain, decided to flee the American frenzy of big business and delve into the ancient tradition of vine-growing, but from the lavish though strict perspective of a château. When he bought the land it must have been love at first sight and so, with good taste and great care, the Torre de Oña SA winery was born.
The emotion and enthusiasm involved in creating a winery was hindered by something a little more pedestrian, the day-to-day running, always difficult and risky. Finally, Leandro Vázquez decided to leave the business, a more than tempting legacy for those seeking new horizons in La Rioja. This situation coincided with the desire of La Rioja Alta, S.A. to complement its traditional style with a new wine, totally independent and different from the Haro sanctuary. Some changes were made after the purchase was completed in January, 1995, focused more on improving and enhancing what was already there than on changing the château philosophy and the modern and powerful wine initially produced by Barón de Oña, S.A.

The Winery

Barón de Oña is a small but beautiful architectural complex comprising the winery, the château and, some distance away, the Chapel of Santiago. The surrounding vineyards supply the exclusive fruit with which Barón de Oña is crafted.

The Vineyards

The vineyard is the true protagonist at the Torre de Oña winery and represents the origin and essence of Barón de Oña. wine.
With yellowish-ochre clay loam soil, the 65 hectares of the San Martín Estate are 1,800 ft above sea level, practically the highest that vines can be grown in this area. All the hard work put into the vineyard is finally rewarded with just 5,000 kg per hectare of the best tempranillo and mazuelo.
As in all great terroirs, each plot of land has a different personality, due to the orientation gradient and age of each plant.

High robe dark cherry red, clear and bright, with dark pinkish tones on the edge ofthe glass. An intense but fresh mentholated aroma with hints of blackberries and cranberries against a balsamic background of “After Eight” chocolate, cedar and liquorice. Well structured and balanced to the palate, with tannins typical of ripe grapes and fine wood. Medium aftertaste reminiscent of noble wood, balsam and liquorice, ensuring a long and elegant bouquet after time in the bottle.- armit
