Domaine Robert Arnoux
Pascal Lachaux has been on a rich run of form for a number of years now with Domaine Arnoux heading unstoppably into rarified territory. His 2007s are lithe, silky and supple and show excellent typicity and give huge pleasure already.

All wines are sold En Primeur and prices are quoted In Bond. Red Bourgogne Rouge 2007 A beautiful scent of freshly crushed red fruits soars from the glass. On the palate, it is like a liquid summer pudding, with its red fruit coulis and cream combination. The tannins are delightfully soft and this is already drinking well. Drink from release. - armit (from 60 year old vines based on the original pinot fin strain that is so highly regarded today; bottled in September). A very pretty red berry fruit nose that is quite fresh and expressive reveals delicious, round and unusually fine flavors for a wine at this level. Lovely and worth a look for a regional red. 2009+ - 86 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Beefy nose. Lots of fruit but absolutely bone dry. Pretty smart but not at all charming or voluptuous. Good for simple lunches? Drink 2010-12 - 16 points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £145 per 12 (IB) - add to basket Vosne Romanée 2007 A glistening robe of colours, this is the essence of dark cherry fruit but with minerality coursing through it. The wood helps to give it a little more polish and weight and there is good concentration here and certainly no lack of style. Very nicely done. Drink from 2010. - armit A spicy and relatively airy nose of spicy red and blue berry fruit nuanced with hints of clove and warm earth merges into focused, detailed and lightly mineral suffused flavors that possess both lovely fresh and finishing energy on the sappy backend. A lovely villages. 2011+ - 87-89 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £345 per 12 (IB) - add to basket Chambolle Musigny 2007 Raspberry coulis, mint and soft spice on the nose, this is very alluring. On the palate there is considerable depth and density and very finely grained tannins. This is hugely impressive for a village wine. Drink from 2011. - armit A beautifully elegant and refined nose of cool and airy red pinot fruit that is picture perfect Chambolle in style leads to detailed, supple and perfectly balanced flavors underpinned by ripe tannin and excellent length. This isn’t quite as deep as the Maizières but has plenty of appeal and character all its own. 2012+ - 88-90 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Round with cherry fruit. Lively and lovely freshness. Tasty and racy. Pretty polished. Fresh and neat. Drink 2011-14 - 17 points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £370 per 12 (IB) - add to basket Nuits St Georges Les Poisets 2007 The 70 year-old vines in this parcel habitually give a high percentage of millerands, tiny berries interspersed amongst the more swollen fruit, contributing extra concentration and structure. There is a charming scent of pine needles, forest floor and spice with a little sucrosity on the long, distinguished finish. Drink from 2011. - armit (65+ year old vines). While not nearly as elegant as the Chambolle, this offers a notable step up in overall depth, both on the earthy red, blue and violet suffused nose as well as on the slightly animale flavors that are rich, full and serious while possessing excellent mid-palate concentration that completely buffers the moderately firm tannins. A first-rate villages and recommended. 2013+ - 88-91 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Dark and a little meaty. Lovely depth of spicy dark fruit and already silky. Very good. Lovely tangy length. Drink 2010-15 - 17 points, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £390 per 12 (IB) - add to basket Vosne Romanée Les Hautes Maizières 2007 Red cherry and raspberry on the nose, bright and energetic with extra vivacity and perkiness. The tannins are supple, ripe and fluid and the minerality shows positively on the finish. Drink from 2011. - armit Mild reduction cannot completely hide the complexity of the nose and this depth continues onto the detailed, precise and beautifully balanced medium weight flavors that possess excellent underlying depth on the linear, minerally and long finish. This is first rate for its level and recommended. 2012+ - 88-91 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £425 per 12 (IB) - add to basket Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Procès 2007 The attack is attractive, even alluring with a flowing plush feel and silky, subtle tannins. Then in the mid-palate, a gear change as the minerality takes over and the structure becomes apparent, adding rigour, seriousness and substance to the charming smile. Drink from 2011. - armit (from 50+ year old vines). A subtle touch of wood and mild reduction render the nose difficult to read but the rich and full flavors are supported by finer tannins and a bit more depth as well on the precise, racy and finely mineral-infused finish that is also noticeably less rustic. I like the balance as well as the delivery. 2014+ - 89-91 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £240 per 6 (IB) - add to basket Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvées Pagets 2007 A more subtle, reserved and overtly mineral nose, this is a wine of great depth with finely detailed spicy fragrances, rich tannins and rounded feel. This is confident wine that hasn’t had to move out of second gear to already be impressive. Drink from 2011. - armit (for inveterate map readers, Clos des Corvées Pagets is situated within Clos des Corvées). In contrast to the Procès, here the expressive nose is extremely fresh with aromas of both red and blue pinot fruit and a distinct floral character, particularly violets, that introduces extremely pure, balanced and seductively textured flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel on the penetrating and beautifully long finish. Worth a look. 2014+ - 89-92 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Lively crimson. Quite a light nose – with lots of fresh cherry fruit – very nice! Very lively and crackling with energetic tannins on the finish. Thick and sweet and dense and lovely intensity and balance. Great stuff! Drink 2012-16 – 17.5 points Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £270 per 6 (IB) - add to basket Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 2007 This is a gentle, flowing cuvée, with little black fruits, even blueberries, and a lick of cream. The style is straight and direct once more with gorgeous, rich, juicy tannins. Drink from 2012. - armit Subtle spice notes add interest to the airy, elegant and very pure black and blue berry fruit that always carries a whiff of warm earth with it and this sense of refinement continues onto the round, sappy and mouth coating flavors that possess a real sense of volume to them, all wrapped in a long finish brimming with dry extract. This is very Vosne in style and character. Lovely stuff. 2015+ - 90-92 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Serious red velvet nose – quite full spread across the palate. Scented and lively and wonderfully complex; tough not heavy. Very precise and well terroir driven. No forced flavours – very pure and great balance. Drink 2012-18 – 17.5 points Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £290 per 6 (IB) - add to basket Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Reignots 2007 A tiny parcel of 0.2 hectares has offered just 2.5 barrels but what is lacking in quantity is certainly made up for in quality. There is abundant vigour and energy here, with the wine already open, expressive and playful, showing its richness and depth but also a complete array of flavours from beautiful, perfect berry fruits, through to spices and liquorice. There is an extra degree of tension here. Very fine. Drink from 2012. - armit (from a .29 ha parcel). The aromatic profile is cooler and more reserved yet decidedly more elegant, which is saying something as the Chaumes is even more elegant than usual itself, with its spicy, hightoned and pure black fruit aromas that complement perfectly the balanced, long and relatively powerful flavors that seem built on a base of firm minerality on the linear, focused and explosive finish. Classic Reignots. 2015+ - 91-93 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £450 per 6 (IB) - add to basket Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 2007 This is utterly stylish. Little black fruits, violets and liquorice abound on the nose but in an elegant, controlled dispersal. Buzzing with life on the palate, the wine is fresh and confident but with detailed layers of flavour and fabulous inner harmony. A compelling Suchots. Drink from 2013. - armit (from a .45 ha parcel situated at the very top of the vineyard). Wonderfully spicy, pure and almost wafting aromas of primarily black fruit but fruit that carries ample spice elements to it that are also picked up by the suave, velvety and lightly mineral infused medium weight plus flavors brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating finish where a touch of wood resurfaces. This is not as impressively scaled as the Echézeaux or as powerful but it’s actuallyfiner and more seductively textured. A great Suchots. 2015+ - 92-94 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Lightish crimson. Vibrant and precise and rich and sweet. Very fine and sinewy with good balance between fruit and that dry, satisfying finish. Real energy and Arnoux quality. Racy and long. Drink 2012-18 - 18 points, Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £520 per 6 (IB) - by allocation only Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2007 This could be a year for those who avoid Clos Vougeot because of its muscular tendencies. This shows considerable finesse and the notes of liquorice, game and wild fruit, with the beginnings of leather too make this a fascinating wine to swirl in the glass. On the palate, it is clear that the wine is holding plenty in reserve and is still backward in many respects but there is considerable potential here but not the cloak of tannins so often found. Drink from 2013. - armit (from vines next to the wall by Grands Echézeaux). Moderate but not intrusive wood spice frames earthy, fresh and dense aromas of red and blue fruit that precede focused, textured, concentrated and sappy medium weight plus flavors that possess a subtle mineral streak that runs all the way to the impressively long finish. This is a serious example of Clos de Vougeot but one that carries perhaps a bit less finishing austerity than usual. For the patient. 2017+ - 91-94 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £520 per 6 (IB) - add to basket Echézeaux Grand Cru 2007 Charming, generous and pretty on the nose, it is the extra tension and the fine quality of the tannins that point towards the stature of this wine. Packed with life but with style, finesse and panache, this is another wine of great talent and appeal. Drink from 2013. - armit (from Les Rouges du Bas). A completely different nose that is notably more elegant with airy and pure aromas of mostly spicy black fruit with background nuances of warm earth that continue onto the rich, full, ripe and mouth coating flavors that are impressively scaled and powerful on the hugely long finish. This is a big Echézeaux that has no problem going toe to toe with a relatively big Clos de Vougeot. 2017+ - 92-94 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 Restrained, a little peppery. Juicy, fresh and silky. Finely structured, quite light in the mid palate, almost delicate, but beautifully sustained and with an inner energy. Drink 2012-18 - 18 points, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 23rd January 2009 £530 per 6 (IB) - by allocation only Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru 2007 Pascal had to admit that for him, this wine “ranks up there with my very best”. This is not a wine to rush headlong at and expect an explosion to the senses. It is so packed with flavour, so intricately detailed and with such rich complexity that it deserves and demands your full attention. The nose begins on the reserved side, proferring a little smokiness, even rocks and flints. With air and time, the layers begin to unravel and the intensity becomes all the more apparent and the wine holds the taster transfixed. The length on the finish is in a different class to anything else in this cellar and yet it is freshness, poise and lift that remain the lasting impression. Drink from 2014. - armit (from a .375 ha parcel situated by La Grande Rue). In contrast to the wonderfully layered nose of the Suchots, here the profile runs much more toward the floral side of the aromatic spectrum with intense violet and rose petal notes that are overtly spicy while displaying touch of crushed red berries, hoisin and soy, all of which can be found on the pure, refined, intense and energetic middle weight flavors that are precise, minerally and linear, all wrapped in an explosive finish that seems to go on and on. A ‘wow’ wine and one of the best wines of the vintage. 2019 - 93-96 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 33, January 2009 £1,400 per 6 (IB) - SOLD OUT |
Pascal remarked that some vintages are particularly tiring to work on as the endless tasting (poor soul!) causes fatigue but with the 2007s, he finds that freshness abounds and energy levels remain on a constant high. ![]() The harvest here started on 31st August and finished inside a week. The average vine age across the estate is 48 years old and Pascal acknowledges that this, combined with the location of their parcels of course, has once again given him a considerable advantage in getting the depth and complexity that these wines have in abundance. |
