The life of Nicolas Potel is rarely dull but he would be forgiven for wanting a slighter calmer existence in the year ahead. A welldocumented falling-out with the Cottin brothers who owned the majority shareholding in Maison Nicolas Potel has meant that Nicolas has had to start again at the beginning. However, you cannot keep a good man down and crucially the two things that the Cottins have not retained are Nicolas himself and his wealth of fruit contracts which have largely stayed loyal to him, given that most of them come from the friends he has made across the Côte throughout his long, colourful life. Deprived of being able to use his own name, his new négociant business has been christened Roche de Bellène, Bellène being the old French name for Beaune, deriving from the Roman name Bellenum. The winemaking is all being done in a fabulous new facility that he has been creating over a number of years in Beaune. And the wines? As bright and energetic as their creator, brimming with life and a showcase for the talents of one of Burgundy’s most natural and gifted winemakers. Nicolas deserves congratulation and support for his courage and commitment to doing things his way and there is no doubting that the only losers in this affair are the Cottins. A star is (re-)born.
