Tiefenbrunner

My greatest concern always was to reach a good balance between tradition and innovation. So my greatest influence has been the example which my father gave me and my inward voice. - Christof Tiefenbrunner

History

Entiklar, a small hamlet in the village of Kurtatsch in the Alto Adige, is home to the castle named after the family that has lived there for innumberable generations, Tiefenbrunner Castel Turmhof. Wine has been produced at Castel Turmhof for over 300 years and today the Tiefenbrunner family is fully committed to the traditions of the region.

The Estate

The estate owners, Herbert Tiefenbrunner and his son Christof, both experienced winemakers, are dedicated to the creation of the top quality wines. From the north, the german influences in the region result in wines of great finesse, elegance and aroma, finely complemented by wild Italian flair from the south. The highest vines of the estate are an incredible 1,000 metres above sea level – these vines were planted in 1972 and produce the most exciting wine of the estate, Feldmarschall von Fenner. Viticulture at this altitude is unique in Europe and is possible at this site only because of the vineyard’s ideal geographical orientation and specific microclimate.

"The estate’s vineyards benefit from an almost Mediterranean micro-climate as well as an alternation of daytime and evening temperatures which allow the fruit to ripen gradually and therefore fully develop their aromatic qualities." - Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com

The Wines

70% of the Tiefenbrunner production is white wine, predominantly grown on south facing slopes, and the remainder a combination of red varieties both indigenous and international. The loamy, chalky soils and the Mediterranean climate - characterised by moderate rainfall and a cool evening breeze producing considerable differences between day and night temperatures – result in beautifully fresh, elegant and aromatic white wines.

notes from christof tiefenbrunner

Wine is my life. When I see wine I have a feeling that I hold in my hands something that belongs to my soul. There are no substitutes for things like that. Even when I was a child and helped my dad, I always, from the first day, believed that wine was something above the rest of farming. I was always saying to my dad that the day would come when we would be opening a bottle of our wine in the best restaurants of the world. This vision was in me all the time. It was a great motivation. And it happened. For me it was a natural step. Our best wishes and congratulations for your 20th anniversary.
