Tuscany
Introduction to the region
Tuscany, along with Piedmont, is the foundation upon which Italy?s wine reputation has been built. In total, there are 20 wines with DOC status produced in Tuscany. It is also home to six of Italy?s DOCG areas, including Chianti, and many of the premium non-DOCG wines. The Tuscan hills serve as a tempering effect on the summertime heat with many vineyards planted on the higher elevations of the hillsides. The principal grape variety of Tuscany is Sangiovese, which is used for the production of Chianti. Brunello is also grown in the region, and that produces Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. In the 1970s a new class of wines known in the trade as "Super Tuscans" emerged. These wines were made outside DOC/DOCG regulations but were considered of high quality and commanded high prices. The two most renowned Super Tuscans are Ornellaia and Sassicaia, for which armit are the exclusive UK agents!
